Wow, this is exactly what I've been looking for! Does anyone know if this "retail kit" comes with the SATA cable AND a molex->SATA power adapter? I"m currently without either of them and my PS doesn't have SATA connectors (older Antec Trupower 480). Thanks!

Not to be a downer, but did you know that in most cases that in RAID 1, you cannot mirror an existing drive just by adding another drive? The mirror must be built from scratch. You take two drives, go into the RAID controller bios and build a RAID 1 mirror. Then you do whatever you want with it. You can't add a drive to your PC and say "mirror this."

You CAN COPY THE DRIVE using a ghost/image program, but that's not a mirror.

Just trying to help.

Not to be a downer, but you're pretty much wrong on this. RAID 1 is mirroring, and mirroring can be done at anytime whether you're using a hardware based mirroring (where the mirroring is totally seperate from the OS, so the OS only sees one drive and has no idea what it really there) or software based mirroring (for example how Windows does it)...in both cases I have yet to see a hardware RAID controller which will not let you build a mirror at anytime, once you attach the new drive you have to tell the RAID controller which drive to copy from/to but it will start the duplication process, which also is done in the background, you can reboot and whatnot and it affects it none since it's a whole nuther left below the OS...just as easy in Windows...haven't tried Linux but can't image it's tough...

What's the performance/reliability verdict on this drive? Good to use as my primary hard drive?

I think the Newegg deal is better.

320GB (uses the new perpendicular recording, which incidentally I think is faster) for $99 shipped.

Same cache size and warranty. So increased speed and an extra 20GB for $10. It is OEM though, so it lacks the cables (but not a big deal for most people).

my only apprehension about the 7200.10 is they are reported to run much hotter. And some reports of early death at newegg. As with all new tech, I like to wait a 6months before going for them.

Suh-weet!!! :D That's really good news for me. I bought one yesterday, hoping it would come with the stuff. :D I haven't bought a retail hard drive...in YEARS. What's the CD for anyway? Diagnostic utilities? Heh, probably won't need those. This is a Seagate HD, not a WesternDigital. ;)

is the rate of early death much higher? any hard drive from any company will have failures

Q:is the rate of early death much higher?
A: I couldnt tell you. But I don't think high heat is a good thing. Anyone else care to chime in?

"any hard drive from any company will have failures"

Yeah if you were wanting to run it in a media PC or with a bunch of other drives for large storage that probably wouldn't be a good one to use. If its your primary one and you run just it or maybe a second drive it probably would be ok.

Could be that the high heat is leading to a higher chance of failure.

At the least, you would want to have good cooling, so I don't know that I'd get it for Dell or other OEM computers.
