I've been buying, installing and servicing hard drives for over a dozen years years. IMH(but expert)O, a five year warranty is next to worthless.
If the drive is going to have a problem you are going to see it in a couple of months, and if you take five minutes of research you can actually run some very comprehensive tests over night and know within a couple of days with hardly any labor.
of thosaunds of drives I have dealt with I would say about 1 to 2% fail in the first five years. BUT almost al those failures occur in the first few months
Causes:
- bad installation or installation into bad equipment (overheated pc, cheap and way over driven psu's)
- damaged in shipping
- freak bad run
- bad design or qc
- other
youwill know this almost always next to immediately. In any case if a drive fails after three years you have to be CRAZY to crack the pc open, get an rMA, send it in, wait for the exchange, and replace it. If i fails in 20 months, statisticall it can be replaced with a drive three or four times as big for 1/2 the money. If it fails in three years even less.
Lastly, case in point about five year warranties being gimmick: you do realize your comment on this drive was an "awesome" based on nothing more than then the gimmick warranty, when this drive is a KNOWN DOG? Techs in our group are already calling this 7200.8 line "the Seagate Deathstar."
