How can we find out for sure they are 7200.8s?

Outpost says rebate is good through the 14th, but form says through the 16th, safe to assume this deal will still be good then? I just hope these deposits go through before it goes OOS, I can't order just yet but I want one.

And how are Seagate's rebates? Don't they have a track record of bad/slow rebate handling?

dont want to threadjack, but is it worth it to return/exchange my ST3300631A-RK 300GB pata 16mb cache and get a .9 instead of this .8? Mine makes a very rare click-like sound when accessing sometimes. I thought all 16mb were .9?

I thought .8 were supposed to be the more reliable drives, and a large number of .9 were failing?

TechnoKid - No since seagates newer drives perform an off-line scan making them do that - sounds like a bumble bee if you listen carefully. The only advantage to .9 is AAM making it a bit queiter.

Here's a couple of reviews:

.8 review

.9 review

From what I could find, part #'s:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB 16MB retail (ST3250623A-RK)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 250GB 16MB SATA II (ST3250624AS)

i was unaware that the 7200.8s ever had 16 meg cache

of course, the 7200.9 looks more like seagate updating the firmware of the 7200.7 and the 7200.8 than anything else. only one drive actually has a higher areal density. i wouldn't doubt the mechanicals being exactly the same.

Thanks, OP, for this deal. I ordered one.

My only concern is that Storage Review's Reliability Survey for the 7200.8 indicates that it scores at only the 11th percentile. That's pretty darned low. Most Seagate Barracuda drives score in the 80th and 90th percentile on reliability. In order, here are the predecessors of the 7200.8:

Barracuda ATA III 88th percentile
Barracuda ATA IV 82nd percentile
Barracuda ATA V 90th percentile
Barracuda 7200.7 85th percentile

So I hope Seagate hasn't just re-built some unreliable 7200.8's that were sitting in the warehouse gathering dust and refurbished them with 16MB caches. Oddly, if you search Seagate's own site for model ST3250623A-RK, you can't find these HDDs.

Thanks OP--I picked one up! I've been waiting for a good HD deal for something 250 gig or bigger. HTPC project coming up!

Also, everyone who orders make sure to pick ground shipping for the free shipping. It defaults to a different shipping method and obviously charges you for it.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more interest on this deal - maybe due to the $39 AR 200 GB Maxtor at Staples this coming Sunday.

Anyway, I picked up this 250 GB Seagate at Fry's in Atlanta yesterday. Rang up at $119 before rebate. The $50 rebate is good on purchases made thru the 16th.

Had to ask a salesperson to find one as there were none on display. It is in fact a 7200.8 with 16MB cache. If Seagate is following their model numbering pattern this is a two platter drive.

Weighing Seagate vs. Maxtor, for $30 more the Seagate gets you 50 GB of additional space, double the cache and a 5-year warranty.

Still considering the Staples deal though.

Check your warranties!!!! I picked up one of these at Fry's on Tuesday. I checked the warranty status (which I do for every drive I buy) and Seagate's website stated the warranty expires Feb 2007!!! I emailed them stating that I just bought one and the receipt AND box say 5 year but website says 1. They told me to scan the box and receipt and email it to them and they will get my S/N updated to 5 years.

Better to find out now than in 2 years when I NEED a replacment. Worth double checking IMO.

Just got my drive today, it's a 7200.8, and there was a thread earlier about Seagate's 16mb drives not having the proper warranty information, so pretty much everybody that ordered should double check.
