Hmm... tempting. Aren't these drives obnoxiously loud? I assume that these will connect to a U2W, non-lvd (40mb/sec) controller with this adapter... am I right?

I know current ata 100 and 133 never really transfer at these speeds...but...
are these really going to be faster than a nice 80gig 7200rpm 8mb drive now a days?
Wonder how 2 of these setup in raid would compare to 2x regular 8mb cache 7200 rpm drives.

That's the theoretical max of the U2W scsi bus. The drive won't come close to that.

This would be a great drive for a server, however... if the noise isn't too bad. :)

I am not a computer savy and this is confusing? If I buy this, can I use it without any adapter? My previous HD was seagate baraccuda 7200rpm with 2mb cache and it uses ultra ata 100 interface?

You need a scsi adapter. Either onboard or a card.

1. These take up 1.6 drive bays
2. THey are VERy slow compared to modern drives
3. They are loud
4. They are HOT HOT HOT ...You NEED a fan with these

basically, I would use they in an old server. After using SCSI myself for MANY years, I find that the quick access times of SCSI are so sparingly appreciated unless you have something up to par with a Seagate 15.3, a FUJITSU MAN or MAM, a Maxtor Atlass II or better, or other high speed scsi drives.

For example, my DAD's pc, with a 120GB 7.2k rpm 8MB cache HD lags in only extreme sitations where mine, a Quantum/Maxtor 10kII, never even blinks. My machine is a multitasking marvel. HOWEVER, in standard transfer rates, his DESTROYS my SCSI drives, as does my own WD SE 120GB with 8MD cache.

Use this as a SYSTEM DRIVE ONLY or for server storage if at all, but then again, don't expect miracles unless you are messing with for example, 13GB+ DV files, and are using phtoshop simultaneously as we are.
