SATA is faster. IDE (which I assume this is) works fine for storage and music, but for games you'll notice long loading times and other things.

Now I haven't been keeping up w/ the hdd lingo...so is this "ATA/100" drive an IDE drive? And also what about UATA vs SATA?

Have a PATA and SATA 160GB Seagate drives. There is no speed advantage with SATA at this time. My PATA is about 0.2MB/sec faster per HD TUNE (statistically insignificant).

I bought this drive today to put into an enclosure and use for backup.

There are 3 rebates to deal with. The promotion expires 7/9/05. Two of the rebates must be postmarked by 8/9 and the other one by 7/30.

Looks like a deal to me!

I have a rough "ballpark" understanding of these harddrives. SATA is supposed to have a faster tranfer rate, 150mb/sec (ATA150) as opposed to 133 with PATA (ATA133). However, these SATA drives are supposed to be "bridged" and are not true SATAs: It is a PATA drive made into a SATA drive. Therefore, the transfer rate difference is supposed to be negligible. Also, these ATA100 Seagate is supposed to have no real difference in speed when compared to ATA133. As a matter of fact, I saw a comparison test and Maxtor 120gb ATA133 had slower transfer time than some ATA100 drives.

sata has more bandwidth. which means dink because that extra bandwidth isn't used... so... pretty cables?

gorcops - don't say anything if you don't know, which is obvious because the "lingo" hasn't changed in a long time, as far back as 10yrs ago (when i first got into comps seriously) ata were ide drives

the industry has so many people snowed, come on peeps READ AND LEARN

this was not about sata2 but sata...and the newest gen scsi u320 15krpm own them all :)

besides from the test "Please keep in mind that we are testing with SATA 1 drives. In the future, we plan to test with 3Gb/sec SATA 2 drives, which theoretically should have even higher throughput. " so this was more of a controller bench than a hdd bench

to be realistic with all the new sata, pata and sataII drives the main thing you notice in a hdd is seek times

You can "TRY" a pricematch. I just picked up 2 drives myself today. Pricematched within seconds to walmart. link I hadent even noticed the walmart drive is sata at the time untill I got home. But they Lady pricematched no problem at the San Marcos, CA store. Came to 106.53 each after tax. -$80 = 26.53 AR

Wow. 27 dollars for a 160 GB hard drive is awesome. HOT deal if you can trick the guy for a price match.

The part numbers for the two stores are the same, according to the link that ModemPower posted. So it would seem that you aren't really tricking the guy.

And the actual Wal-mart price is $98.88 (I am guessing that ModemPower's price included tax - I like living sales tax free!). So that would make it $18.98 (AR)!! I am thinking that I will need to make a trip up to CompUSA this weekend...

Very true you will notice 0.0% difference between an IDE, and SATA drive. This is because all hard drives read, and write speeds fall way below the 100-133MB/s limit on the IDE bus. In general the only difference between an SATA drive, and its IDE cousin is the physical connection, an IDA cable, or SATA cable.

A 160GB 7200RPM SATA dive will perform almost exactly the same, maybe better maybe worse, than that exact same drive with an IDE spec.

Only on totally worthless hard drive cache benchmarks will there be a difference. In real life almost any data in the hard drives cache will be in system RAM, which is more than 2x as fast as SATA, or IDE anyway.

Look at it this way the "newest of the new" drives out there read data at just under 40MB/s if you do the math and you have a 100MB/s, or 133MB/s IDE bus you still have like 60-90MB/s of excess bandwidth, that's more than double the read rate. The limitation in hard drive speed isn't the bus that data is being transfered over it's how fast a platter can spin, the density of that platter, and how fast and efficiently a head can read data off it.

The one tangible advantage that SATA offers; is the ease if installation, and a reduction in case-cable-clutter. No longer do you have to be bothered with huge, and annoying IDE cables.

In short if your sitting on the fence on this drive because you're worried about it performing worse than the same drive with an SATA connection, don't. It's a good drive, at a good price.

actually 50-60MB/s

Max speed is closer to 60MB/sec. The average speed is around 47MB/sec for a decent 7200 rpm drive.

my newer gen 7200rpm drives all have a str of 55+MB/s (WD & Hitachi) and am sure this seagate would just as high if not higher
