Picked up three of these for 89 plus tax at frys this weekend. Great price. They are a tad louder than my samsungs or the three greens I have in my server.

Are the 1.5 TB drives reliable? I was reading some reviews that seem to point to them as not being nearly as reliable as the 1 TB models.

I thought the realiabilty issues was when they first came out over a year ago? And then Seagate released some firmware update that fixed it????

I am only using it as offline backup storage. Basically a few hours a month, then back in the safe.

I have several 1.5TB Barracuda drives running just fine.

Firmware issues were over a year ago... I haven't heard a peep about it these days.

I can honestly say I am some kind of authority on these drives I have 15 of them in a Raid 6 array;

I have had 6 failures in a year and a half. Me and the seagate RMA department should be on a first name basis.

I have found that with any hard drive it is a crap shoot, but these are generally worse.

All of my drives were CC1H with the patched firmware also.

In retrospect I would not have gotten these drives knowing what I know now.

** EDIT I guess these are the 5900RPM drives so my info does not apply.

yes these are horribly unreliable. they sell them cheap at a computer store in my neighborhood but no one buys them because they have such a bad reputation. seagate=maxtor and we all know what that means

I personally owned a 7200.11 640gb and is having some issues with that one from time to time like the parition will dissapear but I use it for non mission critical stuff so don't matter as much. don't know if they fixed these newer ones I hope they do.

Slacker; I have 20 of them. Bad sectors everywhere, insanely annoying, though not a single one has hard failed yet. They wouldn't even work with my adaptec 52445 without upgrading the firmware. No problems on my 31205 though. *shrug*

I am waiting for the 2 gb samsung (or the WD's) to come down in price, and I will try swapping to those. I am very much not a fan of seagate until they get this crap fixed.

I have several first generation 1.5TB Seagate drives and they died upon power up. One literally went up in flames and consequently friend my IP35E MB. Seagate replaced them all with same drives but new firmware and I haven't had any problems since.

But just from that experience alone I recommend stay away til their reputation improves. But as in all cases, except Deathstar drives, it's luck with current drives.
