are these the death drives? I would jump on this, except I'm afraid it'll 2 months later! And though I can easily send it in for repairs/replacement, my "important data" will be gone!!!

I think those were just the 1TB drives?

Too bad this guy doesn't have esata...usb file backup is soo painful.

There were firmware issues with the 1TB drives as well as the 1.5TB drives. Once the firmware was updated, most of the issues were resolved. (There will always be bad drives once in a while however)
I'm not sure about the external version, but I would assume it's the same 1.5TB drive in there...
 
I have the 1TB Segate external drive, no issues and picked it up for $79 a few months back at Staples

It depends on how you organize it. Basic overnight backup is pretty painless at any speed -- especially when compared to being without a backup when a machine fails.
