lately, i've seen more and more products (ie: chips, bread, peanuts, etc) have 'sea salt' written on it's packaging.

come on america... it's just good old NaCl

no iodine in it. It does taste different than your standard table salt that has iodine.

iodine makes salt bitter

No it doesn't. Table salt has a very sharp taste to it. Kosher/sea salt is much softer and a better flavor.

-edit-
AHHH! Bitter, not better. You are correct sir.

umm isn't sea salt a mix of different salts containing other metals besides sodium. i believe sea salt has less sodium than an equivalent offering of table salt.

He said bitter, not better.

Speaking of bitter, I tried some of my dad's salt substitute. Basically potassium chloride. That stuff ruins food. It's really bitter in normal amounts.

It had iodine in it, which is essential to the human diet.

It helps prevent goitre, as one of its benefits.

holy fuck!

Ive been using kosher for years to cook, especially when i want something seared. I recently came across a finer kosher salt, i cant remember the company name, i havent used any of it yet. Its not as fine as table salt, nor as coarse as the typical kosher salt, and i wonder if it will turn out better or worse for pan searing something like a steak

Just like water has different flavors, salt has different flavors.

Find a Mexican grocery store that imports Mexican "Coca-Cola." MOST of that is made with sugar instead of HFCS. (not all of it is, so YMMV)

just wait until the pomegranate craze makes it's way to your area. it seems like everything has that stuff in it around here now!

if that's what i wanted, i could just pour grenadine on/into anything i consume...

One of the more current fads than pomegranate is acai berries. They contain more anti-oxidants than just about anything else, as well as all kinds of other good stuff...why they're so good, they will even unfuck your girlfriend...;P
My Voc-Rehab counselor is a MLM marketer of MonaVie...a berry juice blend (fucking expensive...$45/750 ml and IMO, isn't that great tasting)
It seems like every where I go, I see acai juice, acai berries, etc.

I think sea salt has been used as far back as recorded history. I wouldn't call it a modern fad.

On some of the potato chips I've had you can definitely taste the difference in salt. The sea salt variety has big chunks of salt on each chip. I think it's tasty, but probably not all that healthy.
