SDRAM or EDO?

Hi, I have a K6-200 system that has 32mb 60ns EDO ram in it. Would I notice any perfomance improvement by removing the EDO and installing 32mb of PC66 SDRAM? 32mb is all that I need for this system.

Get the SDRAM, they are dirt cheap.

Well I assume that your PC has a slot for sdram. You can't just take out the EDO SIMMs and put SDRAM DIMMs in their place. They're different sizes.

However, if you could put SDRAM in the system, then put in 64 megs and you'll get your performance increase. You claim that 32megs is all you need for that system, but at the same time you're wondering about how to get better performance...so I'd have to say that 32 megs really isn't all that you need.

As far as I can remember, there were mobos that came out with both EDO and DIMM slots. They claim it'll ease the transition from EDO to DIMMs. Asus A7V266 anyone? 🙂

Besides 64 megs is probably easier to find then 32 since its so cheap. I say you should put some pc800 rambus in there and see how that works. hehe

You will see a greater performance adding 32MB of EDO than you will replacing it with 32MB of SDRAM (assuming that you do in fact have a slot for DIMMs). But the price of SDRAM has fallen so much, you can pick up a 64MB DIMM for less than $30 shipped, so that is the best way to go.
