SD vs MMC cards

I think I remember SD being faster as far as transfer goes. Is there any other adv/disadv of these two cards? I need to pick up a 1GB card for the wifes digital camera I got her for xmas. Suggestions please.

Also are there any differences between SD cards as far as speed? Any cards better than others.

From my experience, SD is faster. I only use SD and I got rid of all my MMC cards.

No. The S in SD stands for secure. SD is basically MMC with the security stuff added in as well as support for some other stuff. SD is generally the popular format.

Buy.com recently had 512MB for $18.95 AR.

Unless your camera only accepts MMC cards, there really isn't a reason to use them. SD cards tend to be cheaper anyways, and as stated above, are faster.

Well i'm sold I picked up a 512 MB Kingston Elite Pro for the camera. It's $28 after rebate.

There's not a lot of difference.

MMC came first.
SD is an enhanced version of MMC - it offers higher speed transfers and 'secure' storage (another name for DRM).

The SD card is slightly thicker than an MMC, so may not fit in a device made before SD cards were released. Devices which use MMC, but were released after SD came out, should be able to use SD cards (instead of MMC).
