SD Card for Wii Nothing More Than A Storage Chest

Well I am here to dispell any myths about the SD card usage for the Wii. The SD card is used for Storage Only. You cannot load Virtual Console games or Wii games saves from it. I am a little ticked off that you cannot load anything from it. It would make sense if you could at least load game saves from it. Hopefully Nintendo will make an update for it that you can load them from the SD card. Well for now my 1GB SD card will just sit in my Wii as back-up of everything that I download. YOU CANNOT LOAD GAME SAVES OR VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES FROM YOUR SD CARD!!!!!!!! To use them, you must transfer the files back into the respective Wii and play them from the Wii's INTERNAL MEMORY.

Update:

  • I tried moving a VC save game over to my SD card and it would not let me. I only have 3 VC games, Super Mario Bros, Wario Woods, and Street Fighter 2. Street Fighter 2 is the only one that i have a game save for (which is wierd) and it would not let me transfer it to my SD card. So as of right now I am going to assume that you cannot transfer Virtual Console game saves onto a SD card unless someone else is going to try with a game like Zelda or something else that has a real game save.

So there's 512MB built in, and you can't add to it? Or can you transfer from the built in to an SD card, and then from the SD card back to the built in memory, and run like that?

thats what he said.

I am pretty pissed about this too. I was asking about this last night and zerocool84 went to test it. they should have given more than the 512 system memory or at least added a way to expand it other than the way it is now.

its probably not that hard to do (or is it zerocool84?) but thats not the point.

In ExciteTruck I believe you can play mp3's off the card during the game. Hopefully that's a trend that continues with some games.

not directly from the game. you have to save your game to the system memory, then exit the game, go to your wii memory management settings, and then copy from the memory to the card. if you want to load that save game, you have to go back and move it from the sd card to the main memory then load the game.

I just sent an email to Nintendo about this. I suggest any one else that has an issue with this do so also. Hopefully they can do something about it.

It's not something i'm going to sell my wii over, but it is an annoyance.

You'd have to move the saves and vc games from the sd card to main memory using the data management console. Its a pain in the ass, but 512mb can hold a LOT of saves and vc games, so its not a huge deal really.

supposedly a firmware is in the works to look for saved games on the SD card...

but... as it stands now, even w/ 5 different games... I have PLENTY of room on the internal memory. I just periodically copy stuff to one of those freebie 16MB SD cards that came w/ my canon. Even THAT has plenty of room left.

The only concern, for now, is VC games. And unless you're buying everything, it's not a terrible issue. And you can just delete and redownload those anyway.

With that said though, they really do need to push a firmware out that will read savegames from the SD card. Or, run VC games from the SD cards, that makes more sense since the save games so far seem to take up very little space.

Is it a perfect system? no. But I don't see what all the fuss is about.

It doesn't really bother me now, but could become an issue as more quality VC titles are released...anyone know that if you move VC games to the SD card if your savestate is lost? I'd hate for that to happen, especially on old NES games that don't have save systems.

Hopefully it is something fixable by firmware.

Translation: I'm mad because Nintendo patched a hole that would allow me to play ripped Wii games.

Nintendo just wanted external storage (like their memory cards on the Game Cube). They thought using standard SD ram would be cheaper than designing a new memory interface. I thought it was an elegant and simple solution myself.

your translastion couldn't be further from the truth. i'm not even sure how this prevents play of ripped wii games anyway...

yeah, this problem keeps people from just bringing a save game over to a friend's place to play w/o destroying their friend's save game (or doing some backup card swapping).

But, I think it would be more efficient to find a way to save games, take the SD card to a friend's hose load the profile and play.

I wonder when the Wii craze will die. Some how, Nintendo doesn't seem to take as much flak for the shortcomings of thier system as Sony does for thiers. They got the wiimote going for them, and thats about it, everything else is sub-par.
