Scythe S-FLEX

They sound awesome from reviews etc, S-FDB (SONY fluid dynamic bearings)

Expensive, out of stock (anyone seen them in UK?) but seem awesomely quiet.

There's 800rpm, 1200rpm and 1600 rpm versions, I was thinking of going for either 1200 or 1600, so undervolting is an option, anyone got any input?

Thanks

According to one source/reviewer @ SPCR who's gotten hold of some to play with they are similar to the nexus orange fans, so it's at least worth a look depending on the price.

I have not seen one post here by anyone that has had hands on experiance with the
Scythe fans. If you buy them plz do a mini-review for us.
Catchey marketing phrases do not make a good fan but Scythe does have a respected
presence in the market place so their specs should be close to as advertised.

Are they made in Japan.? That would be a major plus because my paranoia about the
cost cutting done in China would make me worry about low spec lubricant.

The Akasa 120x25=1400rpm, 44cfm@18dBA, high quality ball bearings and tach/sensor
feed wire that's for real. They are OEMed by Y.S.Tech=a respected name in fans.
The reviews and feed back about this fan is VG.

Not all but some of the Scythe Ninjas come with the S-FLEX fan, if that means anything.

TY, I will read the second thread in my PM, PST.

I did say that there has*not*been a post*here*about Scythe fans in use.
The OP is looking for a 120(i guess) at up to 1600rpm and at that rpm silence is not the
over riding concern.

Note two things lost. I am not a silence freak as some are and a PCP&C fanboy I'm not. 😀

Having a reputation that proceeds me is not something I want. 😉

If there's a reference for FDB then sound has to be a concern, the same goes for undervolting. 😉

Other than noise there isn't all that much between case fans at the same speeds.

Sound is a concern, I wasn't really considering the 1600 unless it could definately be undervolted, I was thinking maybe two 1200s for case fans, and if the 800 really does give around 35cfm then consider that when I get a Ninja. The FDB iss made by SONY, and I read on another forum whilst looking for reviews of them that they're pretty awesome. Also, the MTBF is 170,000hours, as opposed to like 40,000 on other fans, so although I don't necessarily plan to use them for 17years, it's reassuring that unlike the Nexus ones, the bearings won't start to whine in 6months time. That was another big reason for my keen interest in them, as they seem a good long term quiet solution.

They are pretty expensive by case fan standards, I've only found 3 shops in the UK that even stock them at all, and they're all out of stock. But seeing as they would last so long, I'd be willing to pay the extra if they are going to last, and undervolt ok. And there's no LEDs forced on us! 😀

Thanks for the responses! 🙂

 170,000 MTBF, I wonder how they tested that.?

Do come back with a review plz. Let us know how it undervolts on a PWM and rheostat
type controllers.

At present I use a Sanyo Denki 120x38, 102.5cfm@39dBA for intake. I run it 5V off a
Sunbeam Rheobus. In free air at 1:00AM this fan is inaudable from a distance of 12".
At 4" the slightest motor click can be heard.
I use an intake air filter and combine that with SoCal Summer heat, I have a need for
increased intake air at times. An often over looked fan spec is the mm of H2O the fan will
pull. Super low flow fans will have a hard time pulling air through front panel grill work.

If we all lived in the UK=cold&damp, case cooling would be a snap. Remove left side cover
then open a window. 😉

i have two of the mid speed fans. they let out a low pitched hum that is definitely audible at arm's length, though it is somewhat directional so it is louder when you're standing in the airstream than the sides. for comparison, i turned an antec 120x25 tri cool down to low and couldn't hear it.

i want to get some of the low speed fans, but directron was out last time i went there.

I've removed any intake grill crappyness, as I'm happy to just dust sh!t every month or whatever, I'm often tinkering inside the case anyway, so a quick clean up is easy to do.

ElFenix, with the fans in a PC under a desk, would you say most of the noise would be either in a different plane (so to speak) or absorbed? I know it's a bit hard to quantify, but IYO...? Thanks.

I'm still looking around trying to find somewhere to get some from in the UK. As a temporary filler, just how quiet are the CoolerMaster LEDs I keep hearing about? I've noticed they seem to be in loads of mid-high end cases. Or shall I just undervolt a Yate Loon? Or get nexus to do it for me of course.

Mmm, 14cm fan, 57cfm @ 1,000 rpm. The 20db could even be accurate at that speed.

well there is something in my P180 making noise... i'm inclined to say that most of it is probably the stock fan on the x800, and maybe some whir from the hard drives. i do have one of the S-FLEX fans pointing up toward the blowhole, so maybe some noise is coming out that way.

the second S-FLEX fan is in the lower chamber. the power supply doesn't really move all that much air by itself and, because the hard drives are decoupled from the chassis, the drives were getting really hot (like i could smell a little bit of burnt electronics from them). i'll probably replace that with a lower speed fan once i can get one.

It's quite easy to do, won't hurt a bit. 😉

IIRC, Sincity uses that fan.

Actually, Aero Cool turns no results, and the AeroCool I searched for only returned threads talking about the turbine 16 blade fan I already have 😛 and their CPU cooler thing.

The one I linked to does look identical to the turbine one like SinCity(and I) have, but it's 14cm, 140mm, instead of 'just' 12. So 😛 😉

Alllso,

http://www.svc.com/a2330.html

And look, £3!! lol, they've gotta be carp (yes, carp) for that price!

http://www.techfever.co.uk/products.asp?partno=6028&source=affwin

Sure, thermaltake make some crappy products, and yes, it's orange, as if people will think, ah, orange must make it cooler, like Nexus', but hey' it's 13cm.... bigger is better 😀

Discuss.

🙂
