scythe ninja mounting question

I recently bought and mounted the ninja on my Asrock 939 dual sata2 motherboard.

I removed the original CPU retention bracket and replaced it with the one included with the heatsink. What I noticed though, was that the 4 feet on the ninja retention bracket don't pass through the four holes on the motherboard. Instead, they just sit atop on the motherboard.

Is this how it's supposed to be? or is the included retention bracket the wrong size for my motherboard?

If I understand you correctly, it's the backplate and goes on the BACK of your board. I didn't use it. Used the oem backplate already on the board

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I am not talking about the backplate. I am talking about the retention bracket.

It is the black thing in the top left-hand corner, the thing that the heatsink attaches to. It has 4 feet on the bottom, and for my motherboard the 4 feet don't fit in the four holes around the CPU socket. The feet just sit on top of the top of the motherboard instead.

Does that make more sense?

I don't have a scythe, but i do have that board. are those two longer screws that are shown in the accessories for screwing through the two holes at either end of the black thing in the corner? the black thing should definately clicp to the mootherboard as far as I know, it might be worth looking at some reviews of the scythe and looking closely at the screenshots of it installed, you might be able to see.
It is possible that they are for that, as that was the case with the HSF i have, as the manufacturers assume that you have the necessary K8 CPU backplate, as it is supplied with most motherboards. However, it isn't with the ASRock, or at least, mine wasn't, so you'll probably have to buy one, sorry.

To make a bit more sense, on the accessories page, the black thing.
At the end nearest the Ninjya CPU.... instructions, there's what I presume will be a hole for one of those longer screws seen in the middle of the three sets. Obv the same at the opposite end. These holes are for those longer screws, they're supposed to go through that black thing, through the corresponding motherboards holes, and into the normal K8 CPU backplate, that annoyingly isn't supplied with the dual sata 2.

I think. This is pure speculation. Just to check, those four legs are pointing up away from the mobo yes? it's not upside down? lol just checking.

Hmm, I don't have your board but i do have the Ninja. The retention bracket was a simple drop-in in place of the oem bracket. Took about 2 seconds.

Until someone that has both the board and heatsink comments, I would guess maybe they sent you the wrong bracket. Have you tried rotating it?

did it drop in and clip in to the mobo backplate? Alas, i have no idea what the backplate would look like, as this damn asrock board didn't ship with one, in fact, I had no idea i even needed one until the instruction manual for the fan asked for one.

Anyway, if it did clip in onto the backplate, then ian is gna have problems, as his mobo doesn't have one.

I have the Ninja on my ECS NFORCE4-A939 board and it was an easy install, just remove the two screws from the original mount, remove the plastic portion from above the motherboard leaving the portion underneath the motherboard intact, place the black plastic part on top of the motherboard and screw in the two screws. Then presumably you can install any P4 style heatsink.

Anyways, scythe finally got back to me with an answer. There is no problem.

As for your inquiry, you are correct that those "4 feet" are supposed to stand on
the motherboard, and does not mean to go into the holes located on the motherboard.

You can compare the original black retention bracket came with the motherboard, and
the one came with the Ninja CPU Cooler. Both should have the same "4 feet".

You can mount the black retention onto the motherboard, then use the supplied screws to
secure the heatsink as shown on the installation manual.
