As the topic implies, I am thinking about lapping my ninja.

has anyone done this..and if so, what were your gains?

I am running an opty 170 @ 2.7 with 1.415 volts, and it gets pretty hot. I am considering
moving to a P180 for more airflow at lower Db, and if I do so I may want to lap this beast as well. Any help is appreciated.

In addition, I could use some help selecting some fans that push a good amount of air
while remaining as silent as possible. I haev read good things about the sunbeam reobus
so I may be using something similar to undervolt. Thanks!

I have the Ninja and P180. The stock fans are fairly good. What speeds you set them at depends on how tolerant you are to noise. I had all but the top one on medium and it was very quiet.

Stick the raptors in the lower bay, that keeps thier heat away from the CPU etc.

Stick a nexus 120mm (orange) on the Ninja, swap the top and rear exhaust fans if you must. I'd look @ a 1200RPM fan for the top (or another nexus) and undervolt it, and a 1200/1400rpm fan on the rear and undervolt if nessisary. Yate loon are the best choice for those fans, but akasa ones aren't bad either (what i'm using).

Is THIS the nexus fan you are referring to? The CFM is a bit low..are there any fans that push a bit more at same or slightly higher dB? I know, I am asking for a lot :D

The Yate Loons look nice. How are the high CFM fans for noise and flow when they are undervolted?

I know I dont need a high CFM fan for the Ninja, as I have noticed diminishing returns after 1000 RPMS or so. I just want something that will move enough air to make a difference.

I am also considering a fan in the 5.25 bays, perhaps one of the new Scythe 120s that you
can mount in the drive bays...but I have 2 DVD drives so there may not be room.

I have been using Thermaltake Smart Fans, but I hear the quoted CFM figures are not reliable?
They claim the 120s push 38.6 CFm at 17 dB...which I am not real sure of, and I have no way to test.

How are the Panaflo L1A when undervolted?

The idea is, I will use a reobus to give me a full range of volt options, which you do not have with a volt adapter only.
This is what I have been doing with the Thermaltakes with great sucess, but I am under the inpression that there are fans that will push more air at the same dB.

Thermaltake fans are utter crap, they shift a reasonable amount of air, but they are noisy, the specification lies badly. I use a nexus on my Ninja and have no complaints, but if you want to go for a faster fan then either yate loons or panaflos are good choices and both are quiet undervolted.

Before you start modding the bays try the case in it's nomal state. Even on medium speed setting there is a lot of air going through the box.

That link leads me to a blank page, but I can tell you from experience that Panaflo fans do fine when undervolted. And you are right, they do push the mostest for the leastest in noise in the midrange of voltages. There are fans that push more air out there. There are fans that are quieter. However, the Panaflo fans and I buy the high speed ones and just add a ceramic, 1 ohm resistor inline to calm 'em down a bit and they move quite a bit of air that way.

are those specs accurate on the Akasa?
If so that may be the fan for me, although I would still like a little more airflow max :) But like I said, I am greedy.

so what about lapping? Anyone lapped a Ninja...and if so what were your gains? I am sure the case swap will do the job,
but I will probably lap it since I will be doing a pretty big job. After lapping so many heatsinks, I dont think I can deal with the way it is stock lol.

So I got the case, with 5 Akasa 120s that someone posted above. Good fans, low noise, but unfortunately they do not take to undervolting
well with a Sunbeam Reobus. There is motor noise as soon as you drop from full volts, so I decided to just turn fans off if I am not
running and vids or intensive apps.

Right now I am trying some heat up tests with and without fans to see what the best fan configs are. Thanks to MSI core center
I can also control the CPU fan speed...

I also put on a passive heatsink on the NB, which is running cooler than the old loud MSI fan. So far things are looking good :D
Still have a bit of cable control to perform tho, and maybe some sonic insulation if I get bored lol.

I didn't lap the sink tho, maybe next time. So far my idle temps are the same all around, but load temps on CPU and vid card are
5 lower on CPU and 5-10 on GPU.

Really, i heard the Akasas are very good at undervolting. I did read in a review that at some points they will make a noise but if you turn the knob a touch (literally a touch) the noise will go away.

ok....who cares??

hey, go troll somewhere else jerk. His post actually pertained to this thread, unlike
your pointless comment. get lost.

As for the Akasas, I have heard the same thing. I am testing with various fans turned off,
as well as various amounts of power. I am also going to try with 7v adapters instead of the fanbus. Stay posted :)
