Question Scythe Mugen on socket 1200 - CPU backplate install

Hi, long time lurker here!

I've got an MSI B460 Tomahawk motherboard and a Scythe Mugen 5 rev B cooler. On the box it says it's socket 1200 compatible as well.

But the backplate feet don't rest against the actual motherboard PCB, only 2 of the rubber pads reach it.
Instead it rests mostly on the silver backplate that came with the motherboard.

Is this a secure way of mounting it?

The socket backplate seems to be too thick for the cooler backplate. Or at least too thick for the rubber pads.
You could order a new cooler backplate and hope that it fits better. They should be quite cheap on AliExpress.

Its fine...

The thing wont move because it has the 2 holes which are alligned with the bolts on the stock backplate.
Basically the stock backplate is what prevents the warpage of the cpu socket.
I honestly would not worry too much about it, unless you start to see a bowing on the board when you have secured the heat sink.
(basically the board starts to make a smile instead of being straight flat.)

If anything i would be more concerned about underside clearance.

But it seems like the scythe backplate is not in contact with any pins or can cause shorts, so i would not worry about it too much.

You could always grab a few cheap rubber washers at Home Depot/Lowes, and throw them on the two spots where the stock pads are too thin.

As long as the rubber pads are pressed against your motherboard after you screw on the cooler I wouldn't be concerned. The only thing that will be damaged is the cooler backplate, by being bent a bit.

I ended up adding some 0.5mm thick strips of electric tape and then tightened everything.
I dunno if the temps are OK tho.
I've got 2x 140mm fans@800rm (intake) and 1x 120mm fan@1200 rpm(exhaust) and with CPU (Core i7-10700 non-K) stress testing in Linux(installed os is vmware esxi) I was getting temps about 75-77C, tho the room is at toasty 29C. It idled at about 35-40C.
