Scythe Katana Cu <- work with a Gigabyte 7N400Pro Socket A?

Well, as per the title, I have an old Gigabyte 7N400Pro Socket A motherboard with a 2500+ Barton. (Yes, this is my primary system.....still)

I wanted to put a better cooler on it, and came across the Scythe Katana Cu. I like the looks, it's gotten favourable reviews, so I ordered it.

Of course, then it occurred to me to take another look at my motherboard - and I had forgotten that it has NO mounting holes around the CPU.

So, does it need mounting holes or can I use the retention bracket (can't find manual on website.....and none of the reviews tell me....)

The Katana Cu is 520g. Is this too much for just a retention bracket?

??Not sure if I should cancel my order..............

Thoughts?

ahhh..thanks for finding this review - I had looked at others, but seemed to have missed this particular one.

So, you think 520g mounted vertically on a non-holed Socket A board won't be too much stress? (given the "300g" recommended limit by AMD....)?

I decided to return it. I didn't want to risk putting that much weight on the MB with just the little clip thingie.

🙂

Hope your's holds well.....

I had an Aerocool.....something don't remember the model name, but I don't think it's even available anymore.

I was almost tempted to get the Katana Al/Cu - I think it'll have very similar cooling properties at a much lower weight, so less stress on the retention bracket. If you have nothing else, I'd get that one over the All copper, if you don't have mounting holes.....

🙂
