Scythe fan making annoying noise

The 120 mm fan on my S1283 is making a very annoying clicking sound, like the blades are hitting something, which obviously they don't,but it's extremely annoying.

I've cleaned it up and the sound is still there. I'm not keeping it at 3000rpm, is probably somewhere around 1200-1500 rpm. So what should be the problem? Is it dying or there is something else? Can I do anything to stop the clicking or should I just replace it?

Fan is probably out of balance and should be RMA'd. They've got pretty quick turnaround.

Does it sound like a movie projector? My Noctuas did that after my case fell on its side (when I was using the CMS 830) and I took the hub out and cleaned it and replaced it. Good as new!

I just replaced the darn thing, since it was useless anyway. I put it on my S1283 last summer to break the 4 ghz barrier on my E7200 at 3000rpm and since I'm not trying to do that anymore, the stock Xigmatek fan is more then enough now. I also don't have the warranty for it, since I'm not too careful with warranties for the fans, being so cheap and all.
A couple of months ago when I was fiddling thorough my case, I accidentally inserted my finger into the fan's blades. Maybe that was the reason it started clicking, although this sound came out just a couple of days ago.

It's the entire piece that moves - the blades and the piece in the middle (hub) just rotate on a simple sleeve bearing. The Noc's are very simple and usually most have a snap ring or piece of plastic that keeps the (hub) from getting pulled off with a simple tug. I believe the impact of falling over broke that since they come off freely now but they work fine to this day.

I must say that I had the cheap scythe slipstream sleeve fans and they seized up in less than a month from dust and warm humid (ocean) air. I guess that's why they are so cheap!

yea sounds like the bearing is shot. i just replaced all 4 of the original fans that came with my TT Armor due to the exact same thing happening to all of them. bearing just wore out over time and the fans all died at roughly the same time, give or take a few days. one was dead for about 3 weeks before i got new ones, and the other ones were making noticable variations of their usual noise patterns, sometimes buzzing at start up, and other times clicking the way you mentioned. i just replaced the whole set of 120s with low speed UV yates, the 92s with AC Ryan orange and red UV accent fans (fans themselves are actually not bad either), and an as yet unidentified (but good quality) high rpm orange 120mm UV reactive fan to swap out for the stock fan on my S-1283. currently running push/pull with the orange fan in push and a low speed yate in pull. temps are about the same with both fans at minimum RPM on my fan controller, and about 4-10c lower under OCCT with them both revved up to max speed. always good to have some spare fans lying around for a situation like that. like you said, they're so cheap it's easier to just replace them. plus now i can see inside my case when it's dark to do tweaks i need to do with the rig on, without turning on the lights 😀
