I'm looking to get a 36GB Maxtor Atlas 15K II SCSI hard drive for my rig. I need a good SCSI controller for it, but I don't want to spend too much money. I only need a single channel card becuase I don't plan on doing RAID or anything. Could you give me a link to a good (cheap) card that will fit my needs.
Thanks.

LSI-U160 single channel U-160 will do you fine (<$50 on newegg) for just one drive - you will also need an LVD cable with active terminator. But Newegg raised their price recently so they aren't the cheapest any more, but you can get the part number and froogle for best price.

Here are some good SCSI vendors:

hypermicro.com (may offer free ground shipping if you mention www.storagereview.com - check the SR site for the latest offer)
centrix-intl.com
pc-pitstop.com (offers PayPal as a payment option)
scsi4me.com (ditto)
etech4sale.com
and I can usually find stuff (like drives, cables and adapters) for low bucks on eBay.

i bought a couple u320 5 connector scsi cables off of ebay for ~$10, so they can be had for cheap

Zepper - why would you say that card would do good for just one drive? wouldn't it work well for a couple?

Gak! Newegg raised the price to 46.99! Glad I bought mine when it was 30. It will host a single drive just fine. It can handle many more than that. It is a physicallly large card and was intended to be used in a 64bit PCI slot. It works fine in the ol' 32bit slots.

The LSI U160 in a standard 32-bit/33MHz PCI slot has a limit of ~127MB/sec assuming the PCI bus isn't doing anything else at the time. The Atlas 15k II peaks near 100MB/sec (averaging around 85 MB/s) - a second one and you might saturate the PCI and/or the U160 bus, but of course it will still work, just not as fast as it could. You really need a server mobo with a 64-bit and/or 66Mhz Extended PCI slot and a U320 adapter to get the best from multiple drives of that level - they aren't really made for personal use.
. IMO, some of the latest generation of 10k SCSI drives will do best with the U160 adapter on a standard mobo while saving a bunch of bucks... But the OP just wants to use the one 15k drive and for that, the LSI U160 will do fine.

just out of curiosity, so a 15k system drive and mabye a 10k second drive? i currently have a newer generatin 10k rpm fujitsu drive and was considering getting the newest generation 15k fujitsu drive, but don't want to get rid of the 10k drive - maybe use it for a fast scratch disk photshop

Bob,
Even a good 10k drive plus a new generation 15k drive could saturate the PCI bus and maybe even the U160 SCSI bus. But I would assume that the drives wouldn't both be trying to move data at the same time all the time, so the slow downs shouldn't be too noticeable.

Sorry thunder, your question doesn't make a lot of sense...
