SCSI Raid 0 Options and Hi-Fi Computer Speakers

I have 2 questions that should prolly be in different threads, but oh well.

#1. As soon as I get my first job (Grrrr, 5 years at a top 5 school with nothing to show for it yet...) I am going to put together a new computer. I am 95% certain that I want SCSI RAID 0. Money is basically no object. I plan on spending about $3k total, monitor included. Anyways, what are some options for SCSI RAID 0? I'll probably use 2 10krpm u160 9 or 18 gig IBM or Seagate drives. I have seen the Adaptec 2100S Single Channel raid adapter advertised. Is this a good card? Is there anything significantly cheaper that will accomplish what I am looking for ? And lastly will I be able to use a scsi burner and dvd drive on this card or will I need another plain scsi adapter?

#2. Has anybody here built the "Hi-Fi PC Sound System" from www.sound.au.com? How much did it end up costing you? Any other experience with mid-low power DIY amps? I have plenty of DIY xp, but the projects I've done are too expensive, complicated, and too powerful for a PC situation(Leach Amp). The nice thing about this system is the availability of prefab boards. I may switch the IC amp sections out of it and use the DoZ Class A design instead, though this may be too much overkill with the crumby sound cards out there. I am almost certain a system like this will sound far better than any pre made PC system, although it will be considerably more expensive...~$500-700 depending on drivers.

#3. This is somewhat related to #2, but what are some good quality sound cards ? I would be looking mainly for a minimalist approach. High quality DAC's, and discrete class A analog topology. DSP features, sound fields, eax, multi speaker out, 5.1, Dolby Digital, THX, and all that junk are not needed. Does anything like this exist? I somehow doubt it, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe something in pro audio etc? Anybody tried the echo audio mia?

Thanks

My suggestion would be go to storagereview.com for hd info. You'll find that you want to stay away from anything Adaptec scsi raid if you want raid 0. It does fine mirroring drives but you will not get any gain from running it in raid 0.

Second, you would be much better off getting one Seagate Cheetah x15 36lp instead of two slower drives and running in raid 0. The Seagate will dominate. And make sure its a x15 36lp, not just an x15.

If money is no object, then look into an ATTO card and 2 Seagates if you insist on scsi raid.

Can't help you with the audio. But if you are that serious about good sound, why bother running it through a computer?

So would the ATTO UL3D be much more appropriate ? I will consider the X15's as it looks like the price of one 36 gig drive is about 550. +150 for a decent dual channel controller. So i guess the question then would be which is faster, 1 36 gig X15 + u160 controller or 2 18 gig 10krpm seagate drives + raid 0. The cost is roughly 700 vs 900.

I haven't found many published benchmarks on scsi raid at all...could you direct me to a few?

The audio thing is just my pickiness. I do have better hi-fi equipment for listening to music, but my computer will be in a different room and I enjoy building my own audio equipment, plus I am easily annoyed at most(all?) of the computer sound systems i've heard. Enough that I am willing to spend some money and time to attempt to make it right.
