SCSI question

If I have a 68 pin scsi card and get an 80 pin drive, I need to get an adapter right? Just making sure.

Sure you can, but you will need an adapter to change 80 pin into 68 pin. They cost around 25 dollars.

Actually you can find for a lot less.... but quality may vary.

Get one rated for u320 if it's a u320 drive. Most are backward compatible, some are not..

backward compatible? how would they not be backward compatible?

anywho, op - these are the ones i have used in the past and they work fine at least up to u160 since that is what my card is although drive is u320.

yes, there are cheetahs IV in both 15k and 10k flavors (15k.4, 10k.4) and both are u320. their current gens are 15k.5 and 10k.7 with the 15k.5 offering perpendicular recording and able to have a str over 100MB/s - usually peaks @ ~140MB/s at the beginning of a test and then "drops" to ~80MB/s, so even its lowest is higher than most drives

also remember that the u320 rating is like sata 3.0Gb/s or ata100/133 - a single drive can not sustain that speed so you are ok if you go with a u160 card. i just got a 15k.5 so now i am hitting the pci bus limit but still under the u160 speed, so a u160 card is still ok. if i had a m/b with a 64bit pci slot i could still use the u160 card to the drives fullest potential. unfortunately finding a m/b with a 64bit slot is not a cheap task if you want to run current cpus like am2 or c2d - they do exist but are ~$300, and finding a pci-e 4/8x card is extremely expensive too.

When it comes to SCSI, quality really matters. A poor quality part (cable, terminator, adapter, etc) can reak havok on reliablity, performance, and uptime. SCSI parts must adhere to strict and tight electrical tolerances and those parts are not cheap to make.
