SCSI or SATA

I have 3 18.2GB Ultra3 10K SCSI drives from a HP server that were pulled when they upgraded to bigger drives at my office.

Should I spend the money to get a SCSI raid card to use those puppies or get WD Raptors in my socket 939 system?

Scsi is best for Servers etc. I prefer SCSI because of its quickness.

Depends on the SCSI drive models. Unless they are recent drives, the Raptor is the better way to go, with it's easier integration into a system and simpler setup.

Sell those 10ks and get some 15k rpms.

You can spend $39 on a LSIu160 and use them as single drives. Pretty cheap option.
You might have to get some 80pin to 68pin converters.

Do you mean those are Ultra 320 drives? What kind of connector is on the back of them. If it's LVD, then go with an Adaptec 320 controller. It's what I'm using.

Regardless of what people say, SCSI is more reliable, plus you get the diagnostic tools on the controller. When you boot the machine, press Ctrl-A and a menu comes up.

Now, it just depends on what you're using the computer for. Putting a few games on it, yes, go with SCSI. Wanting to store a bunch of MP3s, movies, and pxrn? Get the Raptors.

I second the notion of using that cheap LSI U160 card and run them as separate drives. You can get SCA to 68 pin LVD adapters (if you need them) and U320 rated cables on eBay pretty cheaply. Only mess with RAID if they are going to be used in a high perf server.

I'd take the SCSI any day of the week. It's probably not worth it to RAID them, though; you'd be putting down $200 or so for a SCSI RAID controller, and you wouldn't see a big difference.
