SCSI Firewall OS

I'm looking for a good, stable firewall OS that will support SCSI harddrives. I have a Compaq DeskPro 266 MHz with 24 MB RAM and I've been using Smoothwall on my 486, but it was giving me all kinds of problems (I had to reinstall once every few days), so now I'm trying to put my firewall on this Compaq. This Firewall is being used for my apartment and any computers I may want to use on it, for security and so I can learn how to administer a firewall. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try Clarkconnect or Mandrake SNF.

I think the latest versions of both require 32 MB of ram... getting it to install on less is tough, trust me i know.

Clarkconnect 7.1 only requires 24 MB and can still be had, but that's based on the 2.2.x kernel... look into picking up some simms on fleabay, they're not too expensive.

You could always go the Freesco route... firewall on a floppy. Not sure of the ram requirement though

Windows or Unix/Linux preferred?

If Windows: Probably Windows 95 with ZoneAlarm is all that puppy could run.

If Unix/Linux: Make sure you are comfortable with either, or at least willing to learn a lot about them. Personally, I would recommend FreeBSD as the OS and IPFW as the firewall application. If you read through the FreeBSD Handbook, you will find pretty much everything you will need to get familar with it.

There are many other choices, but those are the two that come to mind this lovely snowy evening.

Well, after a night of downloading, I finally got Freesco (why is it that all the tech sites are slow, but the non-tech sites are fast? Isn't that a little backwards?). Anyway, I decided to put that on my 486 and use the Compaq for something else. I made a disk using rawrite, and put it in the drive. However, now it keeps saying "Boot failed" with no reason while trying to load (or after loading, I don't know wether or not it actually finishes) ramdrive. Anybody have any clue what could be wrong? I have 64 MB RAM on this thing, so that should be plenty.

Try a different floppy.
Is your 486 set to boot to floppy?

Actually, I fixed it by running make_fd.bat instead of running rawrite directly. Now it won't get the IP from my campus' DHCP server... it's always something...

OpenBSD would be my choice. OpenBSD 2.9 with IPF is what I use on my cheap-o machine. Of course, IPF will work on FreeBSD too so you dont have to mess with crappy firewalls like ipfw
