No idea what you mean by promotions tab.

I don't have those tabs, I think I disabled or opted out of it.

Google isn't stupid. They won't make mandatory spam email for your inbox. The downside of free services is that it's easy to jump ship to another alternative.

Dude...it's the best thing ever! You only get real emails in your primary box, and all the other crap is sorted under other tabs. Once you have it trained you never want to go back.

My inbox sorts: primary (stuff I care about), social (facebook, twitter, LinkedIn), promotions (not spam. Emails from sites I have told them I want to see) and forums (any notification from a forum).

My phone only alerts to my primary. All the rest I check when I get bored. Its much better than just one inbox.

*ANY* third party email, especially from a megacorporation, is probably being spied on either by themselves or the NSA. The only solution is to just run your own mail server and have the server outside the US. Also worth doing a traceroute to it to ensure you don't pass through the US, if yes you want to encrypt everything. Though, I'm sure the NSA can crack SSL like it was child's play, but chances are they don't do that as far as random surveillance goes to save work, though I could be wrong.

I've been thinking of switching to a self hosted web based system though, using Thunderbird currently.

Email's inherently insecure. There is no safe option. Even gpg encryption leaves you open to spying. There needs to be something altogether different. Email doesn't work.

Yeah it's ok for non critical communication but in general it's not the best medium. Even if you host your own server you can't guarantee the receipient server's security.

Wtf?

You act like you are sending nuclear launch codes. Here's the thing: no one cares enough about our shitty lives to actually read our emails.

I tried it for about a month and ended up going back to a regular inbox. Just didn't like how it worked.

Yes they do. You don't know when you're on the wrong side of politics, or anything else until you are.

This "I don't care about privacy" meme is load of stupid bullshit. It's like the ghetto bunnies getting on their friends for being educated, and "talking white". It's stupidity for the sake of being stupid. Willful ignorance is the worst kind, and trying to make it cool makes one malevolent.

You are looking at it incorrectly. It isn't one single email that is the problem. Just like with Facebook, a single picture or post isn't worth someone's time to care. I agree with you, we as individuals are just not that interesting.

The problem with all of these databases is that the data eventually becomes enough to create a profile of you. That profile then becomes worth enough money to sell to someone. You may be comfortable with that, but I am not.

Already the people who are dim enough to use their real name and number for a store club card are subject to this at some point. Would you really like it if say an employer or life insurance company could see your grocery buying patterns over the last 10 years? They could tell when you had a baby (diapers), how much you drink during the week versus weekends, if you could be a potential health risk otherwise (few if any greens purchased with your 30 pack of Bud light and steaks).

With email, a picture of you over time could be put together as well. Who do you associate with? What are your political leanings? What online bill payment receipts get sent to you? What organizations do you donate to, or what else gets sent to your email that could be added to this picture of you that would be insanely accurate and personal?

A single data point is basically worthless. A detailed profile over time could end up being priceless to the right buyer, government or commercial.

It isn't that you don't think anyone cares about your life, it is that you haven't thought of all the things that this information could be used for, and frankly nobody has yet.

More than one company is already making credit decisions based off of your social media and the way you type online:

Would You Prefer a Credit Score Based on Your Facebook Friends?

"A lender called Lenddo uses your social network to make credit decisions, CNNMoney says. If you’re friends with someone who was late paying Lenddo back, that reflects poorly on you — especially if you interact with that person a lot.

“It turns out humans are really good at knowing who is trustworthy and reliable in their community,” Lenddo CEO Jeff Stewart told CNNMoney. If you’re not so good at it, that could ding your score.

Another company called Kreditech also uses Facebook, along with data from eBay and Amazon, and it even judges the way you type into the application form, CNNMoney says. People who type in all caps or use no capital letters are apparently, in its view, less creditworthy."

Not caring is not ignorance.

I just don't care if some mouth breather in VA wants to know that I have a problem with daily deal websites and my Verizon bill is due. And if your are sending political emails...then get with the times. That's what twitter is for.

Google's computers scan e-mails and add the ads. Imagine how many people it would take to read everybody's e-mail and classify them for ad categories.

Everything in my promotions tab is stuff I've signed up for. A lot of it is junk newsletters, but all legitimate email.
