Scrolling issue in FireFox

I've been using Firefox for quite some time...since fthe earlier days of Firebird. I'm also using Thunderbird and I'm overall very happy with both programs. However, that's not to say that they're perfect and I have this issue that's really bothering me.
Basically, on web pages that have long listings (i.e. eBay), when I click on an item and then return to the listing, the page jumps back to the top instead of returning me to the point where I left off. More often than not I can resolve this by clicking the scroll wheel on the mouse, but I've been working on my notebook without a mouse for two weeks now and it's really annoying. I understand that this can be due to the website (it doesn't happen with all web sites), but I'd like to know if there is a solution.
Also, in 0.9.1 (it might've started in 0.9, though), the download manager no longer works the way it used. Now, when I click on a file I want to save, it doesn't bring up a prompt; it just saves the file to a location on the HDD (i.e. My Downloads) and the files immediately execute. I'd looked at the download manager settings in 0.9.1 with no luck. I haven't yet tried it in 0.9.2. Anyone know how to resolve this? I want it to prompt me to either save or open the file I clicked on - right clicking and saving the link is too annoying too at times.

There is a setting for this. Click on Tools -> Options. Then in the new window click on "Downloads". The top radio button says "Ask me where to save every file". Make sure that is selected.

Argh, I hate that scrolling issue so much. It is so distracting when browsing po--potpourri sites. I hope there's a solution.

Definitely checked that out. Doesn't make a difference. I've looked into this just now and the files don't actually donwload - they just open. Its like at some point I checked the box to repeat the same action for a certain type of file and can't get rid of it. Certain files, sich as ZIP, prompt for what to do.

I installed 0.9.2 about an hour ago and it seems to have resolved the issue. I'm having no problems thus far...

That's a potentionally serious, and very annoying problem. Stuff shouldn't automaticly execute...
I'd go to the forums at Mozillazine and be sure to mention it.

I don't know how to fix it, but you can try playing around with the advanced settings if you want. To get to them type "about:config" in your browser url bar and it will show you the different settings you can play around with.

I'm thinking that it may be a side effect of upgrading all the time. Maybe copy your bookmarks.html as a backup and delete your configuration directory, and let it get regenerated and copy your bookmarks back.

Not sure what to do.

But I'd bet that either someone had already had a problem and found a fix at the mozilla forums (do a search), or there is a bug report filed, possibly with a fix, or at least people woud be very curious about this.

Sure sounds like a serious problem and I can't seem to get rid of it.

Well go to the mozillazine place and tell them about it, if somebody else hasn't already had the problem. They may have a fix there waiting for you.

On Windows XP/2000, the path is usually %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.xxx\, where xxx is a random string of 3 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and the rest should be obvious.

In there their should be a file called "bookmarks.html". That's your book mark file, it's just a simple HTML page, and is were your actual bookmarks are stored. If you save that file, then delete the entire "default.xxx" directory it should recreate all the configurations with the default settings.

There may be some variations to the configuration file locations, because they've moved here and there during firefox/firebird's developement history. But you should be able to find it.

Once the configuration is regenerated, then just copy back your bookmarks.html file to your new default.xxx directory.

No registry, you see. (except for gconf, but that doesn't realy count). So I've never done it in Windows, but it shouldn't screw anything up.

It's my understanding that this is due to the previous page not fully loading. I'm not sure if this is considered a bug though.

That's unlikely unless the pages are incapable of loading altogether... I wasn't impatient and have considered that.

For what it's worth, 0.9.2 did NOT fix any bugs or change any code - the only difference was that it disabled shell: links. Therefore your problem would also have been fixed by a reinstall of 0.9.1.

As of right now, it doesn't look like either problem is fixed. I'll have to take a good look at Firefox configuration and experiment a little.
