Anyone else a fan of the screwtop wines?

IMO all young-drinkable wines should be made with screwtop. Corks are just lame (both real wood and synthetic ones).

I like to drink one/two glasses of wine with dinner, or just while watching tv and relaxing. I love just being able to get a wine from the fridge, twist it open, drink, then put the cap back on and put it in fridge in case I dont finish it (which is most of the time).

Wines with cork is a PITA to open, then if you dont finish you have to recork it back somehow

Not to mention wines with cork can get "corked"

I saw a video of how to open a bottle with a cork in it... without using a corkscrew. Put the bottle in your shoe, and whack it against a tree or something. Not sure if the video was a hoax or not, but there have been several occasions where we had wine and no cork screw.
 
I don't care anymore. The screw caps just make it easier to open at first.

I bought an amazing rubber re-sealable wine bottle cap at Crate & Barrel a few months back. Goes right in the opening, and comes with a cap. Solved all of my problems.

Real corks are actually the worst way of sealing wines, because it can lead to a corked bottle.

Screw tops are becoming more and more common from better wineries.

Boxing wines is actually the best distribution method, because you can pour a glass and the rest of the wine will stay sealed and fresh in the box(bag). The perception of corks as classy is just what keeps them around.
 
The reason corks are still used is because of tradition. Screwtops keep the wine better, and a lot of wineries are trying to push their acceptance.

No joke, done it many times. You can just put at multi folded towel against a door jam or some other solid vertical surface and bang the base of the bottle against it.

I have no problem with screwtop wines. I like the sensation of opening a bottle with a real cork though, and I save a lot of the corks from my better bottles and stick them in a cool vase for a table decoration. Screwtop saving would be a different feel. 🙂
 
Screwtops are great, are they any good if you're buying wine to keep for a long while though? (A couple of decades or so)

i still prefer the aesthetics of cork, though; and of course my Portugese friends grief the hell out of me whenever they see a screwtop or even worse--synthetic cork! D: 😀
 
Would be nice if the make your own wine places went to screw tops. The corks they use don't keep the wine fresh for more than a few months anyway.

Pretty much how I feel about it- I do like opening a wine w/ a real cork (esp. a wine I've been saving for a special occasion...) but overall am very pro-screw top.
