I feel bad simply by how little time we spend with our dogs due to work.

People are cruel, but I do think we take the whole pet thing a step too far sometimes. At the end of the day, places like China finds dog to be delicious. It's only our perception that makes us defend them.

That said either way I stick with the principle that if you volunteer to take ownership of and care for an animal, you should do so instead of dumping it on someone else (or putting them to sleep). But like others said, I guess that's better than abandoning them on the streets. Heck, that's where our 2 dogs come from... 1 was from a shelter, the other one we just found wandering our neighborhood... We have tons of stray's in our neighborhood...

Presumably a "pet hotel" is where one put their pets in to stay while on holiday. In that case, yes we do. AFAIK here they're called kennels or catteries respectively.

We put our cat into quite a nice cattery over Christmas so we could visit relatives in Germany for a couple of weeks. When we returned, the cat seemingly acted like he thought we had abandoned him and proceeded to shower (particularly my wife) with way more affection than usual (and he's usually pretty affectionate) for at least two weeks after our return. He is a rescue cat, so that probably has something to do with it.

Awww, poor guy.

The fact their first instinct was to kill an animal rather than surrender it to a shelter is a big WTF moment
?

Depending on the city, taking the dog to the shelter may just mean "I don't have the courage to put the dog down myself"

Ex) countless numbers of dogs who are dropped off at their shelter with < 6 months of life left.

The story is not surprising, sadly. We get calls from time to time to come euthanize all the pets of someone who just died.
"Hi, my mom just passed away and we need you to come put down her 8 cats and 2 dogs."
Uhh, no.

As much as I don't like cats, I am sad to say that it happens around here a lot. I wish there was a nerf bat behind the counter for volunteers to use on these folks.

I've seen people just in tears and emotionally crushed when they bring in their pets for surrender because for one reason or another cannot keep the pet. (Usually have to move and the new landlord does not allow pets.) For the past two years, I've been told all the surrenders have found other homes.
