My wife and I took our cat to the vet today. As the bill was being settled up and we were about to leave with our cat, a pitiful cat meowed from further in the building. My wife made some sympathetic remark, and the receptionist said that the cat's owners just left the cat here to be put down. I asked why, and she responded that the owners are about to go on holiday so they want the cat put down.

<jaw drops>

The vet practice convinced the owners to allow the cat to be put up for adoption instead.

I run a dog rescue. Stories like that are unbelievably common.

That happens often.

I've also heard stories of people leaving their puppy in the woods because they just don't want to deal with it.

They are out there, though. A woman in India just got arrested for animal cruelty because a stray dog had puppies in the ditch outside her house, and she beat the newborn dogs to death against rocks and threw them in a field because she "wanted to teach the stray dog a lesson" and drive it away from her house. The poor momma dog was nudging the dead pups and trying to get them to nurse, and trying to get people to help them.

My wife is a vet. Can confirm that this kind of shit happens more often than you would like to think.

Those people are evil evil creatures.

The shit we do to animals is obscene. Lately I've been watching animal rescue videos and it's just rough.

You know, here in the U.S. we have pet hotels. Don't they have that in the UK or where ever this is at?

Presumably a "pet hotel" is where one put their pets in to stay while on holiday. In that case, yes we do. AFAIK here they're called kennels or catteries respectively.

We put our cat into quite a nice cattery over Christmas so we could visit relatives in Germany for a couple of weeks. When we returned, the cat seemingly acted like he thought we had abandoned him and proceeded to shower (particularly my wife) with way more affection than usual (and he's usually pretty affectionate) for at least two weeks after our return. He is a rescue cat, so that probably has something to do with it.

I follow and support Vet Ranch on YouTube. Dr. Matt fixes strays, etc for free. Everyone gets a spay or neuter. :)

People can be freaking evil assholes. To kill a living creature just for a vacation, a one time thing. I hope they get some rare disease the first day of their vacation and become sick and die a slow painful death. That is the lamest excuse I've ever heard of for killing a pet. That, or people who decide to move in places that don't allow pets. How about, don't move to those places?

The fact their first instinct was to kill an animal rather than surrender it to a shelter is a big WTF moment
?
Then again there are dicks that just drop their dogs off somewhere and leave, or tie them to a fence or something. It's majorly fucked up.
