Screwed Up Refresh Rate in Windows NT... how do you fix it?

Changed my refresh rate to a setting higher than what the monitor was able to handle. The monitor shuts down as a result when I boot into WinNT. I know in Win9* you can boot into "safe mode" to rectify the situation....

please tell me there is something similar to the "safe mode" in WinNT....

(Note: loading WinNT VGA Mode doesn't work either)

you have a major problem then. you are either gonna' have to reinstall NT or try to remember key strokes to bring down your refeshrate or your res while the screen is black.

Try "Repairing" the system using the NT Disks (or the CD) and hopefully that would fix it.

i hope you updated your rescue disk? if you did then do a repair installation and reapply the service pack.

Thanks for the suggestions. What I decided to do instead, which seemed to work, is yank the battery on the mobo to drain the static ram..... The thing booted up wiuthout a hitch (after I reset the configuration information).

Grab a different monitor hook it up then change it back....

You can connect and reconnect monitors without shutting down the system, if it is your only option to fix it fast. Don't make this a habit tho...

NO DON'T do a new install.

BreakApart is right:
I would try some other monitor to fix that problem.... but it is strange that the VGA mode does not help.

Yeah sure: if you actually have no error, when you boot up in save mode (except the cruel 16 colors and 640*480 resolution) then change your monitor/graphic settings down to something your monitor CAN do while you are in VGA mode, then reboot and start NT normally.
This must work.

(It worked for me several times.)

He mentioned NT, so i gave a solution that did NOT involve a reboot. I can't take my servers down whenever i make a mistake...

Glad you managed to fix it without hurting anything besides your pride. (hehehe) We have all been there.

Good Luck...

hmmm he said, that VGA mode did not help, so he must have rebooted, right?

By the way: if you have a pure server computer: 640*480 @ 256 colors with 60hz and a 14" monitor turned OFF, is enough, right?
