Took the Jeep out for the opening weekend of offroading at the Mounds ORV park in Mt. Morris, Michigan. After 4 hours of pretty hard driving, it started overheating, badly. I turned it off, dumpe about 2 gal. of water on it and let it sit. About 30 min later, drove it around and it was still overheating. Took it to the parking lot, cleaned out the radiator and let it sit for an hour. Came back and was in the process of going to the nearest carwash to clean the engine bay when i noticed that it was at 4000RPM at 35MPH. Hmm... that cant be good. Now it will not shift out of first, and on top of that, the transfer case is having issues shifting out of neutral and into 4HI. It grinds like nothing else. I'm guessing the sychros.

I had to be flat towed using a 30ft tow strap :Q Talk about a bad way to do things. It not sits at a buddy's house. I plan on working on it next weekend. Just hoping the tranny isnt fried. :(

obligatory dead Jeep pic

Update: Had a chance to look at it today. I hosed off the underbody and free up some of the built up mud. The shift linkage on the tranny was covered in grass/mud. Once that was cleaned, it started to shift just fine.

As for the overheating, i flushed the radiator. It was so bad that even opening the drain plug did not drain any coolant. Once i got a rad. flush kit on it, mud blew out of the drain and all is peachy.

Muahahahaha... It's very rewarding to find easy solutions to possible big problems.

:(

Sorry to hear about your Jeep. My 97 Cherokee has been giving me some flak lately. I had a tune-up done, replaced a bad upstream O2 sensor, and had the fuel system cleaned. All that work set me back, but seems to have cleared things up.

How do you like the Grand's? Have you driven one of the new Liberties? Before long I'm going to need to get a new car, and I'm trying to decide what to go with.

oh, it will not, i will make sure of that. A brand new, completely customized transmission will cost about $2400, however I may end up attempting a rebuild myself. :D

Poor Jeep :(

After you get the tranny rebuilt, put an accessory cooler on if you're going to be offroading like that.

I love my Grand for the comfort along with being original. I can run 33's on this setup and still have climate control, auto dimming mirrors, and power leather seats :D

Honestly, Libby's just do not have the Jeep feel. All Jeeps have a very stiff and unique ride and Liberty does not have this. There is a lot of animosity towards it in the Jeep community.

BTW, i did not come out worst today. Someone hydrolocked their engine :Q

240 before i noticed. Normal is 210. It never hit red. The Trans cooler is definately an ok size, it could be bigger, though. I think mud/water did it in. Somehow the breather tube managed to get itself up mounted and fell, and I didnt not notice it hanging for an undetermined amount of time.

The Jeep tranny's are built for off-roading, so so I don't see any need for an extra cooling system except in extreme situations or possibly if you have a skid plate down there... with regard to the t-case, I'm assuming that you have the transmission in N when you are trying to go through N on the t-case, correct? If not, your grinding problem probably lies there... it does with my NV231 anyway... other than that, good luck with the XJ, I'm sure you'll find the problem. You're probably already registered there, but the JeepsUnlimited.com forums will get you back on the trails in no time.... great people and you can find me in the TJ/YJ forums there :)

Once again, good luck!

That would probably do it :) Change all the fluids and get 'er flushed if that doesn't fix it.

It's ZJ ;) Yeah, all the stockers behind me are kinda cute. To the left of me when i took that pic was a CJ7 on 39.5s. I had the trans in N when i was shifting the tcase, also. As a matter of fact, i could not shift out of neutral on my trans when the tcase was in N, which should not be a problem.

ZJ, copy that :) I don't know my Cherokee's too well ;)

But, if you've got mud and water in there, get that taken care of ASAP and it could turn out to be your problem with shifting (probably is).

Good to know, thanks for the info. If I want to stay in a Jeep, I guess I'll have to go with a Grand. Anyway, best of luck with your Jeep!

Least the engine should be fine, 240's just going to burn new patterns in the carbon. Shouldn't hurt the rings.

Water though, yup, that'll do it. Ouchy. Where is the breather on that? Think my S-10 just vents through the transmission filler tube, though the axle vents have remote hoses. That plugged up once an did a nice job of pushing gear lube through the axle seal. I'm assuming you have an automatic in there, don't recall ever seeing one of the higher end jeeps with a manual.

Friend of mine went charging across a stream once with his halfton chevy. About a 20' span. He hit it at 45mph and didn't get halfway across. Apparently got water in the intake, water doesn't compress....engine just siezed right there. Which is the only thing that saved it, when he drained the crankcase 11quarts of oil water and sand came out.

This is why I liked ATVs :)

The breather tube was originally near the firewall, on its own. I had ran it over and around the steering box to give it some kinks so water would have more trouble getting in there. It fell off somehow and is now just zip tied to a vacuum tube.

Yeah, hydrolocking sucks badly. One happened today. When we looked at his spark plugs, the #1 was wet and slightly muddy. the throttle body was covered in mud. I'm positive that his is gone.

That's a sweet jeep. Is this the same jeep for sale in your sig?

Sounds like mud/water got into your transfer case/tranny. Thats what happened to my friend's Tacoma a couple years back.

yeah!

considering it is in the backyard of a friends house 40 miles from my garage area, i think getting it good enough to get out of there is more important.

No, the Jeep in my sig is a daily driver and is not offroaded. That one in the pic is my toy.

I'm fairly certain that is the case, i have to decide whether or not it is worth it to have it professionally flushed for $125+ or just rebuild it.
