13.5% selling cost sounds reasonable to me, given what real auction houses or consignment houses charge.

oh yea, and i also forgot to mention, the first time i put my samsung galaxy on there, the high bidder contacted me hte following day saying 'hey sorry i cant pay for this something came up.'

and so i had to wait 4 days to start a non paying bidder claim, then wait 4 more days for it to clear, before i could relist my auction for no fees. so ebay made me wait 8 fucking days before i could do something as simple as relist my auction.

and on top of that, i go to leave that asshole a negative feedback - and what do you know. ebay does not allow you to leave feedback on an item you open a non-paying bidder case for.

how fucking stupid is that bullshit?

so now this guy has no negative feedbacks, even though he totally fucked me over. he could just go do this again to someone else and have no repurcussoins again.

payebaypal = non-existent customer service. I was overcharged on paypal fee 3 times selling my photo gear. I contacted their non-existent support and received non-existent response back.

Have you ever wondered why you cannot find a customer service phone number on neither ebay or paypal sites to call?

no arguments there. agreed that shit is stupid as fuck (from a seller's perspective)

but not worrying about retaliatory negatives as a buyer is great too

win some lose some. I still make a killing on eBay (as a buyer and a seller) so I'll always defend them.

well as stated above, the only people who really benefit greatly from ebay as power sellers, which it sounds like you are.

for the every day person who wants to just get rid of some junk lying around and make a few bucks, it's pretty awful.

I'm actually not a power seller (anymore), and i do a lot of what you describe above.

i have been selling on ebay for over a decade though.

well you just stated you "make a killing" on ebay as a seller.

people using it every now and then don't "make a killing" on there.

I use eBay all the time and have had auctions where I could charge more than $15 for shipping. You did something wrong.

yuppers, the negative feedback BS was years ago. the commission off shipping started a few months ago.
pretty apparent that ebay sides with the buyers and screws the sellers.

this shipping cap is at least several years old.

i am selling an expensive camera lens for my dad. sold for 5876.25. paypal took $170 and not sure what ebay will take. I think it says 9% but a max of $100. Is that right? so We'll lose 270 on the deal?

I can say from selling golf clubs (single woods) on eBay that shipping is very costly. First is the box to put the club in (if you don't already have a box or mailing tube, hard to find that will fit a driver, but a bit easier for a fairway wood) that can cost about $8 just by itself. Then add the shipping for about 2 lbs or so for club and box. That adds another $10 or so to the cost.. And this is by UPS .. now if I can find a reusable box for no cost, so much the better. I always say free shipping and include about $25 in my reserve to cover the cost of shipping in the USA only. I refuse to ship out of country. Too much trouble.

For those saying that Fedex ripped me off...
UPS ground: $33.40
USPS priority: $45
USPS parcel post: $24 (and hope it doesn't take 2 months to arrive)

~15% for eBay/PP fees

sold my old PS2 bundle, 15 games, 4 controllers, bunch of other extras.
eBay would only allow a max shipping price of $15.
wtf? i had a pretty good hunch that it was going to cost more than that if it goes cross country.

auction ends and whaddaya know... buyer is on the other side of the country. cost me $30 fedex ground.

a BIG F U to ebay.

/end weak rant

This is why I haven't sold anything on eBay in over 5 years. I still buy occasionally ...

This story is at best unbelieveble.
The Op screwed up in some way.
I flip musical instruments...such as tuba`s and trumpets etc.....
I have never ever had issues with EBay.......ever.......
I also ONLY use USPS..........so figure that one out.
Those of you who have issues...all I can say is awww too bad!!!

Yeah, mixed results here too. The main thing I find is sometimes I get decent deals on expensive tools, such as my Network scanner. I got it for about 800 bucks, when it retails for about 3k. True it is used, but as long as it works, I do not mind.
Selling the odds and ends here and there, it really doesn't do much. But then again, it does nothing when it sits on the floor of my garage. It just depends on what you are thinking about your price. I think ~15% is a little steep, but given the fact if you are a casual seller that is trying to get rid of some stuff around the house that is just sitting there rotting away and collecting dust, what does it matter they took anything, it was earning you nothing before you posted it.

Precisely. In my bumfuck town I couldn't sell anything. Ebay allows me to sell worldwide and I've learned to use it quite effectively. I'll even sell low weight items internationally that don't sell well in the US. I get no delivery confirmation so it's a risk, but thus far it's been very successful. I mostly sell computer stuff, electronics, and games. Though it's true that paypal sucks when it comes to disputes. You can get screwed very easily by a dishonest buyer. Luckily I've mostly avoided that.

I RARELY use eBay and recently sold my first item with them. Well the person that won the auction never paid, and I can't leave negative feedback. WTF is that about?! I guess you can bid on whatever you'd like and never pay for anything. 😡

Wait they have a cap on shipping now? WTF?

Man I haven't sold anything there for a long time, probably never will again.

Amazon is better for mainstream products (video games, movies, books, etc.). Ebay is better for unique one-off items.

I can't believe some still cry about Ebay.

It's well know that Ebay costs @ 13-15% of the sale yet some are still suprised?

You failed to research and now blame them for your shipping mistake?

That works.

I see weekly editions of tabloid-form papers that have nothing but people arrested in the immediate area (all public information) being sold for $1.50.

Do you think there'd be a market if I collected some info on internet malcontents that I could sell to companies?

Just an idea? 🙂
