sold my old PS2 bundle, 15 games, 4 controllers, bunch of other extras.
eBay would only allow a max shipping price of $15.
wtf? i had a pretty good hunch that it was going to cost more than that if it goes cross country.

auction ends and whaddaya know... buyer is on the other side of the country. cost me $30 fedex ground.

a BIG F U to ebay.

Didn't know ebay did that. Is that something new? I remember back in the day when the ps3's came out, people would sell them for $1, but charge like 500 for shipping.
 
Let me guess - eBay also slammed you with the paypal fees + ebay auction fees. I sold a text book on ebay ($40), after all of the above fees - the ebay profit was over 12%.

It appears it is more financially feasible for bigger sellers (for ex., auto parts stores) to sell merchandise on ebay vs. little guys like us. Personally, I will no longer sell anything there.

You did something wrong in the way you set up your auction!!
 
You can also add in anything over a shipping cap as part of your handling fees since they are separate. Your first mistake was shipping FedEx like others said.

amazon's fee and customer service is just as bad, if not worse, than ebay.

When your item sells, Amazon collects the sales price and shipping costs from the buyer, deducts a referral fee of 6 to 25 percent of the product price, a variable closing fee, and a per-item fee of $0.99. The $0.99 per-item fee is waived for Pro Merchant Subscribers.

Here's how it works:

Sale price of the item
Shipping credit
- Referral Fee of 6-25% of the sale price
- Variable Closing Fee
- $0.99 Fixed Closing Fee (waived for Pro Merchant)

I've found that FedEx Ground seems to be cheaper for heavier items. I've shipped relatively heavy items (computer cases, battery backups, stuff like that) for $15-20. Just did a quick quote for a 20lb package and FedEx was $22.82 ($18.09 if paying with a FedEx account), USPS Priority was $38.85, Parcel Post $20.16, and UPS Ground $25.07. Also note that Priority Mail and Parcel Post don't include insurance or tracking, whereas FedEx and UPS do include tracking and $100 of insurance. Anything under 2-3lb is usually cheaper with USPS Priority, though (again, assuming you don't need to insure it or add other extra options).

Box size is important, though. Above a certain volume FedEx will base the rates on dimensions, not gross weight. This seems to be where the shipping fees really start to skyrocket.

But yeah, eBay's maximum shipping limits are kind of ridiculous. I mean I can understand why they did it (idiots charging $1 for an item and then $200 or whatever for shipping to get around eBay's fees), but that's not even an issue anymore now that eBay calculates fees based on item price and shipping. Just causes more problems than it prevents.

fedex is cheaper than UPS and USPS.

usps is only good for ultra light items under 13oz so you can ship it first class ConUS same price, or if you can fit it into a flat rate box.
no way a ps2 + extras is fitting into one of those.

11-12% commission is common knowledge ebay butt rape.
the shipping cap is new (to me).

sorry i misspoke. i use both fedex and USPS but when i ship larger packages OR need tracking it's always fedex over UPS.

Depends on the FedEx or UPS account you have access to.

Shipped a 1960's vintage Schwinn Stingray bicycle a few months ago four states over via UPS. The darned thing weighed over 50#, not to mention the size of the box....huge! Paid $35 for shipping.

As I said, depends on the account....not all are created equal.

resale value of ps2's aren't particularly high and there are thousands of them for sale.
putting in a reserve just kills all chances of a sale.

ebay already changed their billing structure so that their commission is based off of sale price + shipping price.
why do they care what i charge for shipping? they're going to make money on a portion of it themselves.
 
ebay is fucking terrible for sellers now. i have sold 3 things the past week or so for the first time in ages.

2 of the touchpads i sold and added $9.99 shipping. they took 90 cents fee for shipping. when the f did this start?

then i sold another samsung galaxy tablet last night for $305 with free shipping. after paypal and ebay fees, I had $264 in my paypal account. they took $41 in fucking fees.

really sucks there is no alternative, and that craigslist is full of people who all htink they are entitled to the most amazing deals in the world.

13.5% selling cost sounds reasonable to me, given what real auction houses or consignment houses charge.
