Screw You Apple!

I ordered my mac mini on Sept 27th, it shows up at my door on Oct 4th. I get it up and running and everything is going great. A month later Leopard comes out and they offer the up to date program for a discounted copy of Leopard.

I spoke to two Apple customer service reps because I couldn't validate my mac mini over their website for the up to date program to Leopard. Both of them said I was qualified for the program based on my delivery date and that I would need to fax in my submission. So I fax it in a get denied.

I call today and was told it needed to be invoiced on Oct 1st or later and since my invoice stated Sept 27th I was denied. I stated that it was absurd since I didn't have it in my possession until Oct 4th and it wasn't like I bought weeks or months before. I explained that Microsoft offered free upgrades to Vista months before it came out, not that Vista is a great, but its the principle of customer service.

I agree that the reps may have mislead you, but if you wanted leopard that badly then why didn't you wait until it came out?

I didn't. I am using boot camp and being forced to upgrade to keep it. I don't follow Apple news so I had no idea when Leopard was going to come out.

Actually, he has a very valid point. I had a form for a free upgrade to Leopard LAST September with a mac mini when they originally thought it would be ready for a December 06/ January 07 release. I don't see why it was all the sudden inconceivable that a 1 month old computer shouldn't get some huge discount.

That's just pretty poor customer relations on Apple's part. I understand the need for a cutoff date, but they also changed the date of Leopard's release many times throughout the year.

you wanted to use boot camp... so you bought a mac that has that feature as .. beta... and didn't think apple would cut you off on it? while I agree that apple should have handled this differently... you should have looked more into following apple news.

its pretty poor on apples part i feel. i bought my macbook pro in september...and although i did get leopard for free thanks to adc, i feel like all macs that were bought 1-2 months before leopard officially came out should have gotten it for free. its not like apple will lose much revenue, because they make up for it selling ipods and other macs......

Yeah but "feeling" like something should be done doesn't justify the reality that exists.

Leopard's pre-release page said that Time Machine would be able to backup to the Airport Disk - a feature only available on Apple's Airport Extreme router. So in preparation of Leopard coming out, I bought said router and got a big hard drive with a USB case. Leopard comes out...no such feature. I spent $179 on a feature that Apple publicly advertised on their website and even highlighted on their Time Machine page. Apple's fault? Yes, they lied. My fault? Yes, in a lesser sense - I should have waited until it actually existed before spending money on the router.

Lesson learned? Buyer beware 😛

i cant get rid of mine fast enough

if you just want to just get rid of it, I can take it, will pay you for shipping it 😉

I'm sorry, you obviously keep up with enough Apple news to know that a new OS is out, which means that you probably knew it was due in June, but got hasty and figured they'd credit you. You should have waited. Yes, it would be nice to get it for free, but that's not how they're offering it. So next time, check things out fully before you buy. This principle should be applied to EVERYTHING!

it may be a poor PR standpoint to do a 30 day cutoff.. but this is more about the CSR dropping the ball. And the OP's reliance on a beta feature.

They should give it to you, but in my experience so far Tiger is better and more stable.

Agreed - Leopard has some nice features and is a tad faster, but Tiger takes the cake for stability.

You're not missing out on much.

One of my co-workers who uses Macs only hasn't touched Leopard, & isn't planning to for a while.

Too many potential bugs right now, so enjoy Tiger, it's really not that different 😛

The problem is that at some point there should be a cutoff. You want 2 months, I'd like 3, the guy behind me wants 4, etc. alm99 seems to have unfortunately landed on the wrong side of the cutoff.

that's pretty messed up. I think you should keep on calling... telling them how irresponsible they are by asking you to do so much..faxing, calling ect...and deny you at the last step.

Correct! Especially if the feature you are needing is something that is a featured exclusive to the new version coming out.

I do think they would give it to you if you made a big enough stink though.

Apple fans don't research. They just buy

It's called Steve's RDF (Reality Distortion Field) ... though I must say, the last several Apple products I've bought with very little research and been very happy.

..but you knew based on the Boot Camp beta agreement you read over when you installed it that Boot Camp's partition tool would stop working at some point, so it's not as if any of this was a surprise to you. If this is an issue, you should have waited for the Leopard release prior to buying.

Concerning the cut-off date, Apple has to go by purchase date - the date on the invoice - not some random shipping/delivery date. That only makes sense.

If you knew Apple stuff well enough to install Boot Camp, I am surprised that Leopard's arrival would have surprised you.

Re: Boot Camp - the only thing that expires at the end of the year is the partitioning tool - that's it. Your ability to use and boot from the XP/Vista/Etc. partition isn't impacted one bit, so I don't see this as a crisis by any stretch of the imagination.
