I nominate Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

I enjoyed that game much more than I thought I would. While the combat got a bit repetitive, the puzzles were challenging enough, the dialogue was good and the Princess was cute!

The plot was good enough......for Disney to make into a movie!

Ultima Online. -- My favorite hands down.
Guild Wars
Ultima 7
Pretty much any pre-wow/post Warcraft 1 Blizzard game.
DOTA-- probably played this game more then any other.
Heroes of Newerth -- because its dota with a better engine.
Team fortress classic
CS
x-wing vs tie fighter

God there were so many great pc games back in the 90's.

Newer games don't compare really except DoTa style games..

19. Grand Theft Auto 3/4

Open sandbox world describes why GTA has to go up here. It's a world alive, and you get to be the bad guy. The story is well laid out and it's a completely "American" game... it's refreshing.

Made in Scotland :D

Pretty good categorizing, atreus21. I'd be tempted to split out that "simulation" category a little more -- I'm not sure it's worthwhile to directly compare, e.g., The Sims with X-Wing, or either of them with Railroad Tycoon. On the other hand, what *do* you compare The Sims with?

I'd put Thief in the First-Person Variants category -- yes, it's very different from Doom, but so is Portal.

Star Control 2 is an adventure/arcade hybrid, I guess. With the watering down in what "RPG" means over the past X years, you might be able to put it in that category too (though no one in 1992 would have).

Subspace goes in "arcade". Not that it's anything like PvZ, but whatever.

Garçon! More genres!

Damn thats a sexy list of games Atreus21.

:) Wasn't my doing. All I did was comb the thread of you guys' ideas and compile them.

You see, all I'm doing at work is building OS images, so I have lots of time on my hands.

PM me your rankings! I will keep a running tally.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned any of the old Infocom games. (Yes, this is REALLY dating me...) :)

Good point. (I loved Planetfall myself.)

Certainly a huge source of innovation in the early years, and some of them had fantastic stories that really haven't been equaled.

Agreed, greatest game of all time. Since it's already been added I'll use my #2:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

In a world of stale, cookie cutter shooter games, CoD 4 absolutely revitalized the genre by adding in RPG elements. Combined with the fantastic FPS maps, excellent game mechanics, and well balanced playstyles, CoD 4 redefined how to make a great shooting game.

fuck this game. it pretty much put the nail in the coffin for FPS games for me as it encourages noob tactics like spamming and camping. Single player was def fun, but by no means top 100 game of all time! same goes for MW2

Give me Quake, Quake 2, UT/ UT2004 any day over this overhyped garbage

I dunno, MW1 brought a new era to the fps genre, good or bad it has still heavily influenced many games since.

Not a hardcore gamer here, haven't even heard of a good bit of the games mentioned. But some of my favorite and most memorable games (in no particular order)

Midtown Madness 2:
Just a lot of fun, the stunt/taxi schools were a nice touch, and there was tons of fun to be had racing around San Fransisco and London. Also had fun modifying the games (nothing like driving in a semi that can make the jump to Alcatraz!)

Age of Empires 2 and the expansion:
Still play this game with the family over christmas. AoE III just lacked the charm in my mind.

Half Life 2+episodes for reasons given before me

Team Fortress 2:
This game has sucked more time from me than any other. Played it near daily for 2 years, recently took a break but I'm back in it again and loving it. Really helps to have a good community to play regularly with. Its nice to have a game that's just pure fun, to hell with realism!

 Those games always struck me to be targeted to players that couldn't keep up with faster paced, more severely punished for lack of skill FPS.

Planescape:Torment - Simply the best story driven RPG ever. If you want to do more than collect loot and become stronger, this is the game against which all other RPGs are found lacking.

A lot of games that I'd think of are already mentioned:
Team Fortress 2, Freespace 2, Fallout 1, Baldur's Gate, Doom, Quake 3, etc.

But for me, my dark horse would be:

Silent Storm:
- Sure, it was single player only, chugged along like molasses, had terrible - at the very best funny - voice acting, and had glitches, but man. Was it fun.
Everything was destructible, you didn't know who was around the corner, had some ridiculous weapons, and was just a blast to play!

I spent countless hours poured into that game. Too bad all the other games using the same engine weren't so hot . . ..

Legacy Of Kain series. In particular Soul Reaver 1, 2 and Defiance.

Just loved the story behind the game. Complex, a couple of unexplained holes but still a great story.
