Yeah, I almost wet myself when I first booted it off of CD. If only I could get it to read NTFS5 filestructure, I'd be set. :D Otherwise, it rocks.

I tried the QNX bootable CD, but it refused to recognize my MS Optical mouse (USB) or my keyboard (? on ps/2, but why?), so I couldn't get past the video selection screen. :(

Hey, thanks for putting this up. I have tried quite a few linux variants, but always have to unload them and go back to some win variant.

But this CD works great. It is a little slow on the machine I am posting from now ( in Knoppix too!), but i think that is due to the slower than poop cdrom drive,
and only 128 mb mem.

Now if I can just get WINE to work with my winnt command line seti client, I might actually use this on a regulare basis.

However this turns out, this is a keeper. Especially if you just want to play around with linux without really delving completely into it. They have done such a great job, it is almost worth having as a version to actually install on the HD.

OK I figured out how to get into root.
in the program menu there is a folder called knoppix, in it there is the option to have a root shell, there I can get into my ntfs partitions
but if I type in knoqueror (to get a file browser) it crashs (not linux just the command).
anyone know a way to get into a ntfs partition with a graphical browser?

I'm pretty sure there is a seti client for linux.

"I'm pretty sure there is a seti client for linux."

There is, but it is well documented that the fastest seti client is the winnt command line client running under wine in linux. Yep, it is even faster than winders native.

I have tried getting it to run under wine before on full installs, but never had the time to figure it completely out.

BTW, Mozilla is fast under Knoppix. :)

nice find guys. I must admit I'm much more interested in a 180mb Mini-cd version (I bought like 10 of those minicd's and have never found anything cool enough to burn onto them :)).

Thanks to who ever mentioned QNX too. I tried that about 2 years ago (I think, sometimes I have a distorted concept of time :)) and it seemed very cool, but just a little barren on the apps side. I'm downloading the new version now. If only they had some good RAD compiler suites I'd have a go at creating my own apps for the thing (of course they might have that now). I'm just too lazy to code out GUI programs by hand though. . . .

I have read that numerous times, but no longer believe it. I have ran the Win cli under wine, and it is always slower than running it in w2k, although it is faster than the Linux cli.

it cant get this thing to load. It always freezes after it finishes auto-detecting my hardware. The floppy light turns on and stays on.

I thought linux would be like dos, with all the complicated commands to learn
just depends on how you mean that. say, a default install of debian or slackware or gentoo would be < 100MB, no gui, and totally "like dos", but what is the point of "showing" that "off"? no one will be impressed except for people who are already impressed by it. the whole idea of knoppix, is to woo windows people into thinking that linux is some full featured, completely gui accessable operating system, which it really isnt. but people like redhat/mandrake/suse/knoppix/etc make it pretty good for gui people.

linux can take up 20MB on a PDA or it can take 4GB on your opterilleron XP++^2 5 billahertz, the difference is in what software is there.

and then that leads us to the fact that "linux" is only the kernel, and the rest is just a bunch of gnu and bsd and other assorted stuff.

still with me?

Lost me at "quote":)

I understand that Linux is just the kernel and Knoppix is Linux with GUI and a lot of other free stuff already incorporated.

In the end I think the only way Linux can get into the mainstream market is if it is so user friendly that all one has to do is put the cd in wait for it to install all the commonly used apps and drivers and presto a working system. There is no way microsoft can compete with this since most of the software is open source and free. Once game support comes in I believe things will change.

This Knoppix can be useful for people who sell used computers and want to show people everything works before they buy it. (garage sales)

Is knopix a good start to learn Linux, I love the idea of it running from the cd and not having to mess up my xp sytem.

Hi,

Knoppix works great, looks good and boots fast!

I've set up my network card and internet but can not get the kde LAN browser to work. any ideas?

I am connected to a small network (16 computers), connected to the internet with a gateway.

Do i have to start samba first? what do I have to fill in where?

thanx,

BHard

hmm I'd try setting up samba if possible (don't know how you edit smb.conf on a diskless system)

you could just mount the smb partitions from the command line

thanx for your reply mcveigh!

indeed,

starting samba and mounting smb shares from command line does work.

I want to use knoppix so that I can have my own operating system with me all the time. Mounting smb shares on my rig is fine...but i do not want to mount al smb shares on all the systems I put the CD in!

It should work 'fancy', like the rest of knoppix. How else will I be able to turn some wodws users over to linux??? ;) ;) ;)

can anyone tell me how to enable my modem on this knoppix? or point me in the right direction.

at setup, when I query my modem it can not find it, I thought it would recognize all of my hardware since it recognized my 8500, santa cruz, even my wintv card.

its a generic software modem conexant chipset, this is all I need to be able to browse the internet.

Thanks

P.S. is there a ultra newbie site for linux? I dont mind being talked down to.
