And therin lies the problem. 99% of my encoding is animation, for which B frames make a HUGE difference. B-frames in XVid have been just around the corner for 5 months now, when are they finally going in !?

I agree, it's taking them quite a while...It's hard to code that stuff, eh?

I will have to check it out. Maybe I will encode all my pR0n with it.

Pr0n sure does have a huge effect on technology :)

I read somewhere that that is actually true. PC Magazine or something? The Porn industry was the first on the web with all the transaction stuff right?

The porn industry invented the online shopping cart. The reason VHS beat out BetaMax a few decades ago even though BetaMax had better quality was because Sony refused to license BetaMax tech to porn makers. Porn has a HUGE effect through society.

doom9.net does these comparisons every couple months, and as of the last one XVid and Divx5 are damn close, even though XVid doesn't have B frames for *LIVE ACTION*. For animation, well, those B frames matter a ton more since a lot of animation is just panning across a large background, which is what B frames were made for :)

EDIT:

I think I should define "damn close" a bit better. While you can judge which is closer to the source, deciding which one looks better without the source to guide you usually becomes a coin flip.

Do you have any links that explain this?

I've heard 300 different stories as to why VHS beat out Beta and I'm not sure which is right. :)

>> Doom9 hasn't tested a recent build of XviD, and they haven't tested any DivX 5 codec

Link to the Divx5 vs. Xvid (and some other codecs) comparison. While it is true they haven't done a test with a more recent build of XVid (this is with the 3/27 build), I highly doubt there will be any real difference until B frame support is finally implemented. Personaly I can't wait to get Gator off my computer, but wow it's taking them a long time.

i thought it was also because vhs dropped prices first? i just know they originally wanted to charge 100bux per movie hehe, cuz it would be a rental only prettymuch format:p
