Screw ATMs.. I'm using the supermarket from now on instead.

Why pay $1 - $1.50 per transaction on some ATM when I can just go to Shop Rite, buy something for less then a buck, and get cash back?

Seems like the right thing to do to me.

I've oftened wondered why more people don't do this. I'm frequently visiting WalMart up the road and getting a $0.35 pack of gum and getting $60 cash back. Rather than pay $2 for a 3rd party ATM.

It is way more convienent to get money from a drive-up ATM than it is to park, get out of your car, go into the store, and stand in line just to get cash out.

I don't have this problem, as I am rarely too far from a First Union/Wachovia ATM.

The debit machines at the register sometimes have a limit on how much cash you can get back, if you need $100..$300 it may not be an option. The ATM Machines have a higher limit as far as I know. That said, the ATM's at Publix (debit inside or the machine outside) do NOT charge a fee, so, unless your bank charges a fee for using a non-bank ATM it's free.

One of the national banks was advertising no fees at their ATMs either. Some banks are or were going to charge for using a teller to do a transaction. Thank god for my Credit Union. I can't stand banks and their nickle and diming (actually $1.50 and $3.00) you for everything.

A branch of my bank is closer to me than a supermarket... and they have a drive-thru ATM in addition to 24 hour ATM's in the lobby and outside.

Because I have a credit union as a bank. Much better service but not many ATMs.

I will take no minimum balances and free checking to First Union any day

Chase has ATMs just about everywhere here including supermarkets so I don't really have that problem.

My bank has free checking, no min balances and they reimburse me for any transaction fee I get from using an ATM. :)

Heh, I won't go near atm's that aren't my bank's. The atm charges $2.50 and then the bank charges $2. $4.50 in fees to withdraw say $40.
As for using the debit card to pay for groceries and get cash back, that costs a dollar anyhow.

Drive thru ATMs suck. You have to get out of the car anyway since you can never reach anything while sitting inside.

ATM's suck but are really useful. They charge you for your own money bah. Too bad you need it sometimes.

Or you can drive through your bank and do it for free without even needing to make a supermarket purchase... No need to wait for an ATM line, or worry about security - it doesn't get any better than that.

Here in Pittsburgh, about 10 smaller banks banded together and created the "freedom alliance". No fees for any of their customers at any of their ATMs. Works out pretty well since you can find a bank somewhat nearby to pull money out. I have noticed that Walmart and Giant Eagle charge me a small fee if I use ATM...so ever since I have been doing only credit sales.

I bank with National City and BofA. Both have free checking with no minimum balance, no limit on transactions and free Visa check card. AFAIK, so does Bank One.

Oh, and all the stores around here limit cash back to $20.

I've gotten cash back from supermarket purchases a couple times, but .. I'm never really too far from a Wells Fargo ATM.. so it's not a big deal..
