i'm looking to compare before and after effects of a new graphics card and am looking for a program that will let me take on the fly screenshots during gameplay (preferably .jpg format).

any suggestions?

Some games have the ability to take screenshots and save the files in the game directory. Check the options and see if you can map a key to the capture.

this is your best bet. the freeware version of fraps limits resolution of video and still captures, so it won't be as useful for graphics quality analysis.
