Usually. When you start setting up stuff it's just to play around with, obviously.

Most people here will have a paticular reason why they choose this or that eventually. It's a lot about taste. Lots of people like minimalist setup that preserves as much as the usable desktop as possible. Other people like having lots of little doo-dads for monitoring hardware, system logs, and providing music controls and such.

Usually you end up with a boost of productivity, things that you value and things that you use end up being easily accessable and it's quick. It takes less effort to do what you want, more suited to your personal 'work flow'. Also it's just plain nice to have something nice to look at.

Being stuck with the default setup for Windows, Gnome, or KDE is irritating. They are designed to be 'one size fits all'. Serving everybody, pleasing nobody. There are other things that I think of when I think of 'one size fits all'. Things like sweat pants and tube socks. Some people just like something that actually fits them well. 😛
