I have always figured that the space above and below the screen were from the microphone and speakers that make up the phone. I don't really consider that wasted space. My Galaxy Nexus doesn't have more than 5mm around the edge and if it was 1mm I doubt it would matter but its not a big amount wasted. 100% screen would look a lot more futuristic.

Yup, totally not possible to make a screen that ignores touch at the vertical edges with current technology.

I for one do not understand asking for more bezel. They're still too big. And they need to make phones have equal sized bezel on the top and bottom. The OCD in me gets annoyed when I use my G2 in landscape and the screen is shifted over to one side because they chose to make the bottom bezel bigger.

On my Galaxy S4 I often find my palm hitting the menu button by accident. The phone in general is just a bit too large for my hands. I really hope the inevitable Galaxy S5 Mini will combine S4 like specs with a screen around 4.3-4.5 inches, along with the reduced overall size if it keeps that nearly-bezel-free design.
