So I had some really bad screen tearing with a r7 260x I had. I figured it was defective and let it slide for a while. Today, Intried to fix the problem. I put in my old 6870 and I install drivers. The same problem occurs. Lots of screen tearing. After this I tried new memory, then the gpu in a new slot.

are you talking about in games? if so then there will always be tearing if vsync is off. if you are talking about tearing on the desktop then you need to make sure you have aero on if using Win7 or Vista.

On desktop. But what is aero and why did I get away without using it until now?
aero was on Vista and 7 and you simply need to be using it or you will get tearing on desktop. many people change their theme to a non aero theme without realizing it and then they see the tearing. again just simply enable an aero theme if using 7 or Vista.

Well, aero was on but something I did in my random panic/rage fixed it. Both cards now work correctly...

Are you seeing this "tearing" when nothing is moving on the desktop? If so, this is not tearing, and some sort of hardware problem. Perhaps a bad cable or port.

Tearing only happens when the image on the screen is changing, and at the desktop, there is very little that changes.
