Screen Sharing VNC

I am fairly new to the Mac world with a Macbook. I am trying to VNC into the Mac from my PC. It seems really clunky. I am trying to get the Screen Sharing to run in 8-bit. I have options in TightVNC for 8bit, but somehow I need to enable it on the Mac I think. There are almost no options available for Screen Sharing on the Mac.

Does anyone have any tips on how to improve the VNC speeds (screen refresh etc) from the Mac? 8-bit was my first thing to try.

Have you tried something other than ScreenSharing? LIke ChickenOfTheVNC for example.

Nope. But that is a suggestion like I was looking for. I will look into that.

although isn't Chicken of the VNC only a client? won't I need to run a different server on the Mac? I want to get to the Mac from another computer.

Honestly, I am not sure. Have you considered googling 'os x vnc server'?

While not exactly what you asked, you may want to check out the free version of LogMeIn for remote access. It works really well for me and it has several different color modes, including a black and white as I recall.
