Screen resolution / game resolution question

I have a Viewsonic LCD monitor that has a native resolution of 1280x1024. I recently switched my computer over to my old CRT and changed the resolution of my games (Doom 3, HL2 and Far Cry) to 1024x768 and I saw a dramatic improvement in framerates with minimal difference of visual quality. My question is, if I go back to my LCD monitor do I have to use the native resolution or can I leave the settings at 1024x768 for better performance? That is all, Thank you.
 
with games U will not notice that much of a difference .... text on the other hand will look blury ..... keep the native resolution on the desktop and play games 1024*768
