How badly would a non-acoustically transparent screen mess up my sound if my LCR were behind it?

It will certainly make a difference. Now how much is up to your gear, the material, and how discerning an ear you have. It's the high range stuff that will get seriously muted and your imaging will probably get destroyed into one big muted soundfield.
