Screen off when turned on

Okay. I bought this motherboard recently because I thought that the previous motherboard was broken because the screen didn't show when the computer was started and no sounds were coming from the motherboard.

The new motherboard seems to have the problem 1/3 of the times it is turned on after being off. I simply turn it off and turn it on again and it works. There are no error messages, and games/applications run smoothly. Could the motherboard have some errors or maybe the video card? I haven't tried the test yet with another video card since I won't be at home for a while, but when I swapped the video cards on the old motherboard, there was no change.

Maybe the motherboard AND the video card had some problems (and I just couldn't tell for the video card) or is it the new motherboard? Of course, I'm not the greatest expert, so it could be something else. You guys tell me ;D

Thanks.

Just a guess, but I'd go into BIOS and make sure they were set for gfx card, instead of the onboard gfx

That would make sense. Since it is a Micro ATX, they probably would do something like that. They even had detecting the floppy drive as the standard, and since I'm far from pro, it took me about two tries to figure out what the error message at the beginning meant.

Thanks - I'll try it...or hopefully I can convince my brother to finally try to fix some computer errors by himself 😵.

Another guess, a little "out there".

Check that the CMOS jumper is in the right place too.

qpwoeir,

Please enlighten the rest of the group on the following as to help U on this:

1.> When did this problem start happening? (ie. is this a new build, old, Dell machine, HP, etc....)
2.> details on vid card, psu, OS and anything else u can think of. (eg. Gross Salary, car u drive).

As for your problem, i suspect either PSU is failing or there is a short somewhere in your case. (I lean in this direction (cause my dog pute is pulling on me) LOL! really, cause u purchased a NEW MB and still have the same problem.)

good luck,

al

Details - Summary at the bottom

1. About 2 months ago the motherboard gave it seems - the video did not show and the motherboard was not giving me any signals/beeps for codes. I consulted the forums and it seemed dead. I bought a new motherboard (above) and the computer runs fine now (including motherboard beeps). The problem is that the monitor does not display anything when I turn it on sometimes. It hasn't happened twice in a row - once I reset it (turn it off/on), the display is fine.

2. New Antec Neopower 550 PSU, old ATI X800 GTO, AMD 3200+ Venice (friend bent pins but was able to realign them!). Obviously, only the video card might seem to have a problem since the situation happened on the previous computer. HOWEVER, I tested my spare video card (X700) on the old motherboard and received the same problem. I have yet to test it with the new motherboard because I am at college.

Basically, I do not believe that the problem is the same. The old motherboard was old and did seem broken. The screen was always black for that one, but it only happens once in awhile with the new motherboard. I really want to check the BIOS and swap video cards to see if those tests can provide a solution, but I cannot at the moment. I tried to convince my brother to take a shot at it, but he doesn't want to risk breaking stuff (not a bad point).

Thanks again!

Yeah no need to fix it till it's broke 😀

I have the same exact problem. I have an Asus board, but half the time I try to boot up or even just reboot the computer I get no video, I have to turn off the computer, then boot it back up and like you, when I run games applications everything is fine. I even tried another video card also and I had the same problem. As far as a short though, if you have a short with the case will all the fans power on still? When I turn mine on, everything powers up, I just get no video. Also it's random, because there have been some times where when I can boot it up and then restart 2 times in a row where one time I had to reboot it 4 times before I got video, I almost thought the mobo was completely dead that time. Mine is a socket 939 board.

I get this problem with an old asus mobo, never had it before - maybe its a recent xp patch or something??

I fix it by disconnecting/reconnecting all my peripherals then turning it back on

mine is an asus p4pe old one with a p4 2.533
I also sometimes get nvidia driver infinite loop blue screens sometimes(6600GT AGP), usually when it gets a little hot, but I can usually reboot and it doesn't happen again.

also the video only hangs past the xp loading screen (when it goes into 2d native res of 1280x1024)

ie scan disk/post etc will all show but as soon as xp loading screen is done and it tries to goto desktop screen goes no signal and then off.
