Screen goes black while playing BF2

It seems that no matter what setting I play BF2 on (Ultra, High, Medium, Low) after a while I start getting these stutters where the screen goes black for a while. It then goes back to normal. I'm fairly sure this is a video card problem, as while this is happening I usually find I can still manouver my plane. For example, if Im diving in a plane and the game goes to a black screen, if I pull up I can prevent my plane from crashing. Also, the screen doesnt always go black. Sometimes it goes mostly black, but there are still some effects or objects left on screen.
My machine:
ATI Sapphire Ultimate X800XL(w/Zalman fan)
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ SD
DFI nF4 Ultra D
Antec Tru550W(30a/12v)

Would this be a cooling problem? I opened up the case and ran it with a fan blowing into it, and the problem persisted. Could it be a problem with the PSU? Anyone have any ideas?
 
Hm...never though of that one. I dont have another monitor on me at the moment, but I'll see. Any other suggestions?
 
ah i had this happen when i downloaded the demo.

my video driver was out of date so i updated that stuff, i play on a laptop, with decent specs, and it runs fine now, but since the videodriver was out of date, it would crash on a lot of stuff.

i dunno, look for updates for anything you've got.
