Screen area size application?

This question demonstrates my incredible laziness, but does anyone know of a sort of 'one-click' application that can change the screen area size (e.g. - from 800x600 to 1280x1024). I just got a wireless keyboard/mouse, and like to IM from the couch a couple feet away, but can't read at high resolution...

plus, it is hard to see the display properties from 6 feet away on high res
