SCREAMING COMPUTER!!!!

I just purchased a computer not too long ago and when ever I try to install a program off a CD I get this ear piercing beep that stays on for a long time. Its just a regular 56x drive, however, my Acer burner does it too. I installed a program off the internet the other night and I got just a couple of short beeps. Could this be that my CPU is overheating? I still have a lot to learn with computers, but I unplugged and then reconnected all of the connections to my CD drives. Any information would be very helpful and appreciated.

A beep from the internal speaker? Or a high pitch whine from the CD?

I'm pretty sure its a beep from the internal speaker, because when I installed a download off the internet I got the same noise. But it didn't carry on like when I install programs off a CD.

Okay... this is a really wild a$$ suggestion, but...

It sounds like you might have the hard drive light and the internal speaker wires crossed.

A quick resolution is to simply unplug the internal speaker.

should I consult the mobo users manual to check if those wires are crossed, or is there a way to test the system to see if that is what happened?

No really any way to test it that i know of. Other than seeing if the HD light blinks on your case when the HD is working. Just unplug them both, and then boot up and test it out. See if you get the beep anymore. If you don't, then that might have been your problem, if not keep looking

they are labled on the mobo for a reason also I don't suggest leaving the system speaker unplugged, as it is critical in diagnosing problems relating to POST (beep codes)

The plot thickens.............. I was just finished burning two CD's. Right before the track was finished burning, the program stalled for a bit and that d@mn beep came on again. It went away though after the program got going again. I have 512MB DDR, so I don't know why it should be stalling unless it has to do with the compatibility issue with Windows XP and Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. Could that be the issue??

Give us your system specs. and we will try to diagnose it further.

I suspect it is your cpu over heating......

also I have known cooling fans that are starting to go bad to start to make a variety of sounds that mimic onboard speaker sounds. Squeeks and squawks........

I have an Athlon 1900XP, Antec 1040 case w/ 2 Sunon 80mm fans, Sound Blaster 5.1, 64MB Geforce 2, 512MB DDR, 40GB 7200, and Shuttle AK31A motherboard
