That's what I always loved about the Scream flicks. They aren't super intelligent, but they are definitely what one may call a "serious parody", where they are trying to spoof the genre, yet still make a strong attempt at an entertaining film in the very genre it spoofs.

It was such a good parody, it spawned a new parody... :D
And hell, the parody that parodied the parody, itself spawned a mini-genre of parody... then again, one might also say the Scary Movie franchise, and the entire "____ Movie" franchise, was simply an attempt to mimic Mel Brooks famed series of parodies/spoofs.

really want to make your head asplode? The original script for the first scream was titled "Scary Movie"

speaking of spoofs, there is a scene towards the end that my wife turned to me and said "I can see them making fun of this on the Scary Movie series" and if they did that part would be hilarious. it was funny in Scream 4, it would be hilarious when they overdo it Scary Movie style.

i'm also pleasantly surprised at the imdb rating for it ... it is extremely high.

The Scream series has always been a very well produced production, basking in the glory of it's own pitfalls, offering comical parodies, yet seemingly remaining a "serious" thriller/drama. In a way, acknowledging the series as parody almost ruins the films... and the movie is like a major confusion of genres... it's a horror/thriller, drama-ish, comedy-ish, and also moonlighting as a parody.
You know, Zombieland was kind of like that. And I loved that movie too.

It's one of those rare gems that crosses genres perfectly, and grabs that much more of the spotlight.

And yes, I still need to see Scream 4. I definitely want to see it, and whether it's at the theater or on disc, it's definitely a group watch with my buddies.

I don't plan on seeing this in theaters but the cast hottie quotient is high so it's marked for renting. Alison Brie, Hayden Panitierre, Amie Teegarden, Marley Shelton...yums.

Hayden Panitierre is unbelievably hot in this movie rockin' short hair. The movie exceeded my expectations. I'd say it's an 85 out of 125.

Now why would you go to 125? Your rating scale has left me puzzled.

The twist at the end was awful, but otherwise it was your standard popcorn-thriller fare. Pretty entertaining overall. The beginning was hilarious.
