Will that cause any permanant damage/unwanted side effects? I'm talking about surface scratches where there are no chips + resisters + pins + anything else. I sorta scratched the area which says "AMD" on the top when putting on the heatsink. Its a very light scratch. As of right now, there are no problems (CPU boots, havent tested further...waiting on new MB). Could this cause any problems in the future?

Considering that a few (very crazy) people lap their FCPGA P3's, I'd say you're probably OK, especially if it boots properly. Thermal compound will fill it, so you don't need to worry about that.

Be more careful!

Some people do. I was tempted to try it on my Celeron 566 back when I first got it (I ordered it the day they first showed up on the web.), I figured it was better to lose a $150 Celeron than a $300+ P3.

I did, however, lap K6-2's and one Celeron PPGA.

:D
