Hi Folks -

Listen, this is my first time building a system. I am trying to do it right. Excuse what is probably a very obvious question... but here goes!

I just got all the components. I am about to assemble. For my AMD T-bird 1.2Ghz I bought a Volcano II cooler. I also bought a tube of Arctic Silver compound. Now, do I scrape off the little square of silicone(?) compound already on the Volcano? I mean, seems to me I want the CPU kernal, Arctic Silver, and the aluminum of the heatsink as in contact as possible with no other stuff in between to impede the heat exchange... yes?

thanks!
jim

Wipe it off with some tissue, then use some rubbing alcohol (or finger nail polish remover) to clean it up. Make sure it's dry, then you're ready to apply your Arctic Silver. Apply it to the CPU, not to the heatsink.

the thermal pad on the volcano II is pretty tough.
a tissure isnt going to cut it. youre going to have to use your fingernail or something. just be sure not to scratch the heatsink
